Sleep!

Hi there
My DD is nearly two months old.....and yet she still seems to be asleep for most of the time. I have read many of the threads on here about other babies of similar ages who won't go to sleep, so it seems a bit ironic that I'm posting to ask if DD is sleeping too much?!?!

We have a good routine in the evenings - she is generally in her cot by 7pm and usually goes off to sleep on her own, with music and her mobile to look at. SOmetimes I stay by the cot, sometimes I don't. Up until a few days ago this early evening feed (I'm bottle feeding) would get her through until 11 or midnight....then the next feed would get her through another 3-4 hours.

However for the last couple of nights the early evening feed (sometimes only 2 1/2 - 3 ounces, depending on how much she has taken during the day) has got her through until 2 or 3 a.m....at which point she will only take another 2 1/2-3 oz (she usually falls asleep) and this will last her until 6.30-7a.m

So my first question - as she is still only young, should I be waking her up more often to feed as I'm worried that she isn't getting enough, as she usually takes anything from 3 - 4 1/2 oz for her daytime feeds. Or should I rely on the fact that when she needs food she will tell me?

SO we don't have a problem with her sleeping at night time.....she is very good. Therefore you might think that she would be more difficult int he daytime, but she still sleeps a lot in the day without too much fuss. Some days, obviously, she won't sleep for more than 20 - 3o mins at a time...but most days she will sleep between feeds and only really wake up for feeds. She sometimes is awake for longer periods when she plays and I sing to her etc.

SO is this normal? Am I just extremely lucky so far, or should I be worried that she is sleeping too much?

Any advice from the pros out there?I'm still fairly new at all this!
THanks

don't worry!

some babies need more sleep than others and you will find that your baby may need more sleep some days than others (have a look at the NCT book of sleep, its very reassuring for this).

At 2 months she will start eating less in the night. My friend's baby slept through (11pm to 7am) at this age (the lucky cow) - as you say, she'll let you know if she's hungry.

sounds like you're doing great!

How's her weight? If she's putting on weight then she's OK, if not, then you may need to feed her more often. If she's gaining weight well and still sleeps this well, lucky you!

She sounds very similar to my DD. She slept from 7pm-7am from 8 weeks and behaved much the same as you described during the day. Hope that's of some help.

Add up everything she has drunk during the course of the day. 2 1/2-3oz doesn't sound very much, but if she drinks that every 3-4 hours she is drinking between 20oz and 24oz a day. My DS slept so much his father nicknamed him Rip Van Winkle! Good Luck Sarahu
