15 month old waking between 5-6am

DS2 has been waking between 5-6am every morning for over three months now and I've had enough! I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

The only time he slept later was on holiday when we kept him up until after 9pm. At home, he goes down with no problems at around 7pm / 7.30pm. I don't really want to keep him up later, as he is shattered by then and I need some time in the evenings to study.

He wakes in the morning crying, so I've come to the conclusion he's either still tired and can't get himself back down or he just wants some company. He's not hungry, as he has a lot during the day, milk before bed and isn't bothered about breakfast and milk until past 7am.

I've tried leaving him to cry it out and he just gets hysterical. Controlled crying doesn't seem to work either; by the time he settles back to sleep, it's time for us all to get up!

Anybody have any experience of the same problem? I seem to recall DS1 would play happily in his cot when he woke and can't understand why DS2 won't do the same.

Is there anything bothering him at that time - light coming through the windows, the milkman, the boiler clicking over etc?

No, I've got blackout blinds up and the house is quiet.

Is it worth doing wake to sleep for a couple of days and see if that makes any difference?

Thanks for the suggestion. How does that work exactly? What kind of time would I need to stir him?
