I wouldnt until they can roll about by themselves.

Jess is 13 months and we still put her to sleep on her back but she always wakes up on her front.

I know its not recommended but we did this with dd from a similar age. She could turn her head from side to side ok. She just wouldnt settle unless on her tummy. Although I was worried about it at first she was fine. We made sure we had a mattress with airholes. She is 7mo old and still sleeps this way.

You can buy or rent an alarm that goes under the matress which goes off if there is a disruption in her breathing pattern. I think the general recomendation is that once they can roll over by themselves they can sleep on their tummies.

With DS2 he was so miserable on his back that I have to say I put him on his front from very young (6 weeks or so) - felt dreadful about it because of the strong advice to the contrary - but it was the only way he would settle. He is now 15 months and still snuggles down on his front. It goes against all the guidelines but there are many many other contributory factors for SIDS.
