Good sleeper turned bad

My ds is 5 months old and has always slept well enough. He moved into his own room two weeks ago and took to it well and even did a couple of 7-7 shifts - great! Cut to this week tho and it's all change. He is waking up after three hours or so and whining for about two hours before going back off; I don't know if there's something wrong or not, he is fine when you pick him up but cries when put back down again. He will sleep fine if I bring him in to sleep on me but I can't do that all the time: have tried bonjella and calpol but they don't help so not sure its his teeth. Does he just want cuddles?! I don't know what to do and am worried about starting bad habits which cant be got out of. Sorry for long post, thanks for reading

Are you giving him some milk through the night? Its common for good sleepers to turn bad at this age. Its to do with the gigantic developmental progress they are making and also is related to the need for solid food not far off.
Once solids are established at around 8-9mths things miraculously improve and they go back to sleeping through.
Don't wean early though and take your time with it when you do do it. Just give extra milk at night and wait for the phase to pass.
