How much sleep for a 4 week old?

My DS sleeps all day. I wake him to feed most of the time (is BF). Unfortunately at night he is a bit less settled but still sleeps - eventually.

I expected a bit more awake time by now but while he might be a little bit alert for around half an hour after a feed, he soon nods off.

He is gaining weight well and has the usual nappies I would expect. Is it normal and if so when will he begin to be more awake do you think?

Is he jaundiced? DS was jaundiced for five weeks and the midwives didn't notice but the HV picked up on it.

He may just be a sleepy baby though.

No don't think so. Thanks for reply though.

Sounds normal. They get more wakeful at some point between 0 and 6 weeks, and yours may be at the 6 week end of that. If he is feeding well and gaining weight then he obviously just needs the sleep.

It may be a bit of a shock to your system when it comes to an end though.

Mine was sleepy for a long time and he wasn't janudiced. He fed like a beast. He started to wake up properly around 6 weeks or so? It started off where he'd be awake in the morning then sleep in the afternoons, then gradually more awake in the afternoon.

I remember really stressing over how much my ds son slept when he was younger. To the point where I was blaming everyone (well mainly mil) for encouraging him I.e rocking him, having him in his pram too much etc when in reality it is as people have said, it is just because they need to sleep.

Thanks. He is being more alert recently so I guess I will be cursing not making the most of it soon!

My dc2 has just turned 15 weeks and it's only in the past 3 weeks or so he's started being a bit more awake. Until then he would literally sleep 13 hours at night, 7 hours during the day and I'd have to wake to feed. He was putting half a kj on each week so think it was just a huge growth spurt
