18mo, should we drop nap?

having real trouble getting DD (18mo) to settle in the evenings. She's recently started taking a long (for her) nap after lunch, and ever since we've had trouble getting her off to bed much before about 8.30/9. She wakes about 7.30-8 if left. This would be fine, except that I often need to work in the evenings, plus it's a bit traumatic for all (bath, milk, bed, get her up, more milk, bed, cry, repeat).

Yesterday i put her down to nap and she didn't seem to want to, and then put her to bed at about 6.30pm because she was wrecked. Straight to sleep until about 8 this morning.

WWYD? We can use the no-nap expedient when we really need her asleep early (i.e. the rare occasion when we go out), but I think she wants and needs the 1.5h nap. TIA - I know it's a small sleep problem in the larger scheme of things, but just looking for some advice/guidance

My daughter went through phases of napping then not until she finally gave up the nap altogether. If she has had a busy morning or a bad nights sleep, I will put her down for a sleep in the afternoon and I generally gauge this by her behaviour i.e. if she is naughty/teary, I will put her down for a nap.
My friend has an 18 mo that goes the whole day without a nap.
