How can I change baby body clock?

Wonder if you can advise?

Ds is nearly 1 and a half and until he got a nasty bout of hand, foot and mouth virus last month he was going to sleep at 7.30pm and sleeping past 6am. Going happily into his cot - sucking the back of his hand.

When ill he could not settle to sleep (no longer able to suck his hand for comfort) and would not settle til 10pm, wake at 5am and take long day naps to compensate.

Once better he resisted his cot more than before (no longer sucks his hand sadly - the mouth ulcers during his illness must have been a horrible experience to put him off)but generally slept until 5am but no later.

Now he has a cold he is doing it again! LATE bedtimes despite our best intentions, up at 5am and long day sleeps.

So - How do I get him to sleep past 5am? His body seems to set an alarm for this since he was ill.

Also - how do I get him to love his cot again? He usedto wave me off so happily. Now I have to put him down very drowsy from the milk to get him to settle.

Can you reduce daytime sleep?
Are you sure he isn't hungry?
Can he have a special teddy or something for comfort? (dummy - know some disapprove blah, blah whatever)
Can you read him a story whilst he is lying down in his cot?
Could he have a teddy he has to show how big boys go to sleep?

Dunno if that's any good. You any good with night terrors?!

THank you Lucy85 - he has a teddy which he does cuddle. Think you are right about cutting down day sleep and then longer night may follow? WIll try that once he is well again.

No idea about night terrors. Only just realising how complex toddlers are... they can fight sleep like no others!
