Ski weekend in France without kids - can anyone recommend anywhere?

DH and I are thinking that we may try and grab a cheeky weekend/mid week short break in France before half term. We're thinking Les Gets/Morzine as its reasonably close to Geneva, but anyone got any recommendations or know of anywhere that is good for a short break?

Merci.

Chamonix could be good - or stay in Argentiere. The ski area is a bit spread out though. What about Megeve? Lovely resort, very nice skiing (albeit not that challenging).

HeadlessLadyH · 14/01/2010 13:33

Thanks skimummy. I'll look at Megeve. Never been there. I've ruled out Chamonix because the area is spread out, like you say. Am also looking at Morzine/Les Gets.

Gosh if you find anything, I'd be interested to know too as I'm trying to plan exactly the same thing!

Same locations too. One problem I've found is getting accomodation as not many places are prepared to do 2/3 nights in high season. Megeve is particularly bad for that according to Flexiski, who I have spoken to this week!

We usually have a ski weekend in March in Chatel (on the French/ Swiss border). It's about 90 mins drive from Geneva but there's loads of skiing in the Ports soleil region only 5 mins away from the village.

I recommend Megeve which is just over an hour from Geneva airport. Infact my partner has a very small Studio apartment in Megeve which is very near the main cable car and the pistes around Megeve are fabulous and vast. He rents it out should you be interested. It has bunk beds and a pull out sofa bed, TV, bathroom and kitchenette, and balcony. Megeve is a very unspoilt old French ski town with very few Brits monopolizing it.

MmeLindt · 15/01/2010 11:25

Megeve is a lovely village.

Morzine/Avoriaz is a similar distance from Geneva airport and is really nice too. The Portes du soleil area is massive, it is one skiing area and lots of little resorts, Les Gets, Champery, Abondance...

We are one step closer to booking. We have the child care for the Dcs sorted and have got flights in mind. Once the flights are booked then I will start looking for accomodation. I've been to Morzine before and really liked the Les Gets area so have a couple of possibilities there lined up.

maltesers your partner is so lucky to have a place out there!! I may very well come back to you, but my preference is for catered chalets (I like to be cooked for!) and like the sociable aspects of them.

Action Mountain

Been here for a week a few times, but they do short breaks, lovely, very reasonably priced, super food - just outside Morzine. They do transfers from Geneva too.

Thanks Bikerunski. Am going to email them immediately! I like the fact that in the village there is a bar called Rufus - the name of DS2!

Ooh spooky coincidence we have just booked a girls weekend away to celebrate special birthdays at place called Chalet Spycat, looks absolutely fantastic, has outdoor hottub, sauna, in house massages, personal shuttle to the slopes and half board, sorry don't have the link but google it and check out the reviews on Trip advisor, so looking forward to it.

HeadlessLadyH · 15/01/2010 21:17

Even more spooky Rookie, my colleague at work went to that very chalet last year! Sadly I think they are booked up the time we want but I know my colleage had a fabulous time there. I remember the name as its quite unusual. I'm sure you will have a fab time - a girls weekend sounds great.

I have drunk a lot of beer in Bar Rufus!

I'll CAT you my real name, I think they might do discounts for personal recommendations.

BikeRunSki · 15/01/2010 21:18

Ooh, you don't have CAT.

You star, thanks. I've already whizzed off the email, and if its a goer I'll let you know. It looks like just what I'm looking for. Fingers crossed they can get us in!

HeadlessLadyH · 16/01/2010 09:54

Bikerunski have heard back from them. Fully booked for the dates we need . I'd got really excited last night too. Thanks for the recommendation though. Maybe another year.

Pants pants pants. Bloody in laws have changed their mind about the days we had in mind. Still hoping that we can get away at some point. I'd got so excited too. FIngers crossed their stint at the church coffee morning is something they can perhaps rearrange.

Check out chalets direct and post your requirements in the solutions room (link is on the right).

We've found some great places over the years on here

Wallace · 21/01/2010 20:53

maltesers - I might be looking for holiday accomodation in or around Megeve. I'll speak to dh and cat you if suitable if that's okay
