Changes of clothing...

I realise I'm coming across as a total twit, but...

When you go skiing, do you go in normal clothes then change into ski gear?

Unsure what I'll need to take.

Help, anyone? And forgive my ignorance. Again.

You travel in normal clothes and wear normal clothes in the evenings after skiing. So a couple of pairs of jeans or something. You may want to take a 'nice' top for going out too. You wear your ski jacket in the evenings normally and snow boots if you go out.

yes don't be one fo the nerds travelling in full skiwear on the plane! Just sensible, comfy winter weight clothing and jacket (with gloves and hat to hand for later). I normally take gym style trousers to wear down to breakfast with ski tops and lounge around in afterwards and a change of jeans with a few tops for evening. A pair of shoes/trainers for indoors, snow boots for out.

Well, it seems we'll be travelling to the slopes each day from Carouge...

So, travel in car in jeans/jumper/traniers and change into skigear once arrived, then?

Wuxia - for your daily journey to slopes dress ready to ski. But for the journey to your resort travel in jeans etc and pack your ski stuff in your bags.

I usually spend the evenings in jeans and jumpers. I don't bother taking any "smart" tops with me as it's just not that type of holiday for us.

If you do go to bars and restaurants immediately after skiing, you just go as you are, in your ski gear. Everyone else does. IME, you don't need a change of clothes for the car journey to and from slopes each day. We strip DCs down to their thermal layers if their salopettes are wet so they don't have to sit in them in the car.

aah so you only mean as in the trip to the lifts in the car on the day . In that case dress ready for action but agree be prepared to strip off kids afterwards or have a change for them into something cosier.

You know, it is so easy to feel like everyone else knows what they are doing.........this will be my 5th skiing holiday and I still feel like a novice at times .

Wherever you rent your skis and boots from will show you how to fasten and adjust your boots. Your ski instructor will demonstrate how to clip in and out of your skis. If s/he doesn't then ask

Don't be embarrassed to ask lots of questions. Better to get the right info than struggle on in a state of confusion. There is a lot to take in but it will feel much easier by day 2

A small tip: boot rooms get so unbearably hot - especially when struggling with DCs too. Don't put your jackets and scarves/hats/gloves etc on until you have got yours and DS's boots on You will be sweating buckets otherwise

We are off to Thollon Les Memises tomorrow morning - FiL lives there. So excited to be skiing over Christmas

we are ready and packed. Supposedly staying for 7 days. But our airport is now closed and all flights cancelled for tonight due to snow. Just hope it is open in the morning.

How many DC do you have, tulpe, and, are they confident skiers? Kids seem to learn so quickly!

my twopeenys worth is that i always take 2 coats - 1 to ski and 1 to wear at night. mainly this is because my ski jacket is a shell, so not very warm but very tech and cost me a fair price so i don't want to damage it out at restaurants etc, and would still need extra warmth layers. oh and it's not very pretty either.
don't forget sunscreen/lipbalm/ziplock bag to put purse in when skinig.

We didn't make it this morning . Our flight was cancelled. We woke up at 3am (to leave for airport at 3.30) but easyjet had cancelled all flights until midday today.

They have given us an alternate date of Boxing Day and coming back 2 Jan which we have accepted. Just hope the weather has cleared by then.

Hope your DP is fine with Chunnel adventure. Sounds a total nightmare at the moment.

I have 2 DCs - aged 5 and 9. 9 yo is finally gaining confidence and is probably as good as me now - he has been skiing since age 4. The first few years he hated it though - cried and complained for much of the time . But you will see that this is often the case for little ones . My 5 yo was super-confident and fearless (which was very frightening when he tried to throw himself down a steep blue without being able to stop.....!) but now has a healthy balance of enjoyment but knowing his limits! He had his first proper ski lessons this year, having been in the nursery class the year before.

Really sorry to hear that, tulpe! What a disappointment.

A week in the snow'll be better than nowt, at least!

So far (as of today) good news with the chunnel.
DP should be ok coming through, but, let us all pray this weather clears pretty damn soonish - we're chunneling to GVA 28th and DS and I flying back to UK Jan 4th!

A few inch of snow and such disruption! Makes you wonder how on earth places like Russia manage. Tut!

So, I guess you're having to rearrange yourselves for Christmas now. Got you a bird yet?

You and DCs sound like pros! They do say the earlier you start learning, the better! Not sure what hope I have, then...

my other two pennies worth is to remember to enjoy your holiday - it is not an exercise in 'see who can ski the longest/hardest/fastest/most death defying. just remember to take it easy, enjoy the scenery, stop for coffee every few hours and smile. if you are scared, take it slowly, and chant 'i think i can'. if you want to stick to easy slopes, say so. nothing worse than someone dragged down a black before they want to be.
