anyone else facing the ignominy of realising their children are better at ski-ing than they are?

dds are 8 and 6 - we're just back from holiday, and while I can still, I think, say I'm better than them, it's a (very) close call. helped by the fact they have no fear. I went for the first time aged about 24. they, on the other hand, have been doing it since they were 4. aibu to contemplate not taking them for the next 15 years ?

You will probably go through the stage of rationalising that their short skis fit round the moguls more easily like we did, but the truth is skiing is something you learn far more easily as a child than as an adult.

LIZS · 19/04/2009 21:10

lol dh reckons ds had shorter racing skis while his own hadn't been serviced in a while

serin · 19/04/2009 21:32

We took ours for the first time the week before easter, Kids and DH had never skiied before so it worked out cheaper to get a private instructer. After the second day she had to tell DH (as kindly as she could!) that he was actually holding the 6, 8 and 11yr old back!!

Poor bloke

MrLSG · 20/04/2009 09:04

DS1 out-skis me technically now, although when it comes to going fast I still have too much momentum for him to keep up. DS2 hasn't yet worked out how to turn yet, so I'm still better than him - but he is only two!

Video of both here.

weblette · 20/04/2009 11:26

Oh yes, 9yr-old dd is waaay better than me already but since I started to learn at the same time as her, guess I expected that. Have about a season before ds1 overtakes me too.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 20/04/2009 17:54

I think this is normal, and am very happy with it! DS1 outpaced me in speed and techniques two years ago when he was 9, and DS2 this year when he was 9, so am now completely outclassed. I rationalise it by thinking that I have to be more cautious as if I get injured I wouldn't be able to drive home and DH would be not entirely happy about flying out to drive us home ..

DD could outski me when she was 6 and I ski black runs! She is very good. We often get chased and stopped by ESF instructors on the piste who are very disappointed when they realise she's English.

She went down a moguly, icy black this year at full pelt. Still only 7 and has no fear.

Rebeccaj · 23/04/2009 15:53

DD isn't even 5 and is about my level already, but then I'm crap! A season of ski school next year and she'll be way better than me
