Anyone know much about skiing North/East USA New Year?

We will be in the US for Christmas/New Year and want to nip off or a few days in-between to give our hosts a break. Could either do a city break in New York, or squeeze a few days' skiing in somewhere that side. Too far to go to Colorado etc..
So, where would be open (i.e. guaranteed snow), and not too crowded, and reasonably close-ish to an airport?
We're all intermediate skiiers, by the way. Don't need black runs but not nursery runs either. European reds, mainly.

We are off to Jackson in New Hampshire to ski the white mountains this Christmas - should defiantely be snow and a wide range of resorts and runs?

I worked one season at Stratton mountain, Vermont (prob too far?) but very nice, and good snow making if no natural snow (on a very large number of runs). Great childrens facilities too. The only down side was the temperatures on the east got very low in the depths of winter.
