Bansko - Bulgaria for beginners

Hi,

Easter falls early next year and we are looking at a ski holiday in Bansko Bulgaria followed by a few days in Sofia.

We aren’t skiers. DS1 has done it before but the rest of us have just done 1/2 day. Bulgaria appeals because it’s cheaper and we love that part of Europe. Because we aren’t experienced we won’t be comparing unfavourably to France.

I like the look of Bamako, looks Bulgarian with nice restaurants and bars. I’ll probably have a couple of 121 lessons then leave the boys to it and read a book in a cafe.

I’m reading mixed reviews online. Anyone have first hand experience?

We are not looking for the best.

Loved Bansko! Great town for food/wander,, old town is really lovely if you fancy a walk. Skiing was great too and not expensive at all, we will be going back.

Sounds great - thank you!

Ive only ever been the beach locations in Bulgaria and loved it. People are friendly and can easily walk around during day and night and not get hassled, would go again

Sorry I’ve never been to Bulgaria by just wanted to say make sure you check the altitude of the skiing.
With global warming it’s now pretty warm in ski resorts by mid March.
I would only go somewhere with high altitude skiing that late in the season otherwise you risk having little snow to ski on! Even if they have snow making equipment it can only run if temperature is low enough

Thanks all. @QueechB- from what I’ve read online it looks relatively reliable. It says firm in the morning but can be slushy in the afternoon. I think we will give it a go.

Bankso is great for beginners but Borovets is better. However, check the ski conditions. You can’t ski in slush and the beginner area will be full of it. Even in February they were relying on artificial snow

@Truetoself. It’s says in the morning it’s snow would that work? We won’t want to ski all day. To be honest I’m booking a couple of 121 lessons and that’s it for me. I’ll be happy with a nice cafe and a book but the rest of the family would like some ski time

Interestingly I was talking to a friend about Bulgarian Easter skiing yesterday. She’s a teacher and being limited to school hols went there some years ago… said the snow was terrible. She was saying that last year at Easter the snow had been incredible in France (resort was at 1600 so not particularly high). Go for Bulgaria but manage the expectations of the skiers.
