Sestriere- any thoughts?

Looking to book a bit last minute. There seems to be a lot available in Sestriere with discounted prices. Whereas everywhere else seems to be a bit sold out unless we want to spend a fortune.

just feeling slightly wary and wondering if there’s anything we need to be aware of that might be putting people off going there hence the discounts…

anyone have any thoughts?

I skied over there from Montgenèvre a few years ago. If you’ve got a good deal, go for it. Good ski area and st the moment the snow is awesome.

Sestriere is largely a purpose built resort for the Turin Winter Olympics. It's functional, but lack's charm. It's probably the best skiing in Milky Way with a good variety of slopes. I stayed in Sauze d'oux a few years ago, and spent most of the time in Sestriere.

The region is usually pretty cheap as it hasn't has the investment that a lot of the top ski resorts have had over the past 20 years. So, the lifts are slower, and the hotels generally a bit dated. Lift prices are also cheaper.

The bottom line is that if you are going for the skiing and the weather forecast is good, then Sestriere is great. If you're a bit more of a casual skiier or there is a lot of snow forecast, I'd probably pass.

We went a couple of years ago, hotel was right at the bottom of the slopes, ski in ski out. Despite being a bit charmless we liked it and had a good week there, including a couple of enjoyable Apres sessions in the Igloo bar!

Our booking included evening meal, which we never usually go for, and I’ll admit we still ate out a bit as I can’t stand all you can eat buffet type meals. There were a few shops and some nice bars further up the hill.

My son is on his way there for a school ski trip and there is lots and lots of snow (but it will be full of teens next week Grin)

I was in Sestriere last year and Sauze this year.

It's a great area to ski IMO - I far prefer Sauze as a resort (lovely bars and restaurants) and it's a 'proper' village and not purpose built.

Food is great and cheap both in resort and on the mountain.

€6 a pint, €2 coffee

The Sansicario area is my favourite area to ski but had fun everywhere.

Check out sauzeonline for weather forecasts that they post weekly
