Is Feb half term always awful?

Trying to sort a short ski trip but it looks like our only time might be Feb half term. I have heard terrible things about how busy it is.

Is there anywhere it's not awful at half term?

What are the exact half term dates, as this can vary from area to area?

UK half term generally falls in the week commencing Sat 14th February (Week 8) - which coincides with when much of Europe also has the half term holiday. That week is certainly the busiest week of the ski season, but some resorts cope with the crowds better than others because they have invested in lifts and infrastructure.

France can get very busy - to the point of overcrowding - while some of the Austrian and Italian resorts are less hectic. Saalbach-Hinterglemm has probably the fastest and most modern lift system in Europe, so apart from the 9.30 queue when everyone wants to get up the mountain and you might wait 15 minutes, waiting times are relatively short. St Anton is also a good option, as is Kronplatz in Italy.

Picking a resort less popular with British guests can also be a good choice. For example, Wagrain and Flachau are very popular with Danish and Scandinavian guests. The good news for UK skiers is that Danish half term falls in Week 7, i.e. the week before the UK holidays, so these resorts might not be as busy as when the UK and DK half terms clash.

We have been to resorts in Austria and Switzerland and it’s been fine. The number of lifts and size of ski area matter. We never went to France but always found USA and Canada fine - except for jet lag!

MargoLivebetter · 23/12/2025 11:01

Have you considered any of the Scandi countries? There are decent sized resorts in Norway and Sweden and if you are of intermediate standard with DC who are still learning there are good resorts in Finland too. They are often less hectic in Feb half-term.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 23/12/2025 11:05

It depends where, and how big the ski area is, personally I love la plague as it’s so big it just sort of absorbs very big numbers really well

France yes - I’ve always avoided at half term. We’ve done Austria (Scheffau) and Italy (Champoluc) at February half term and both were fine. Mornings tended to be noticeably busier than afternoons.

SparkleandFlights · 23/12/2025 17:00

This is good to hear, thank you!

In my experience it depends when Easter is... if it coincides with the start of Lent, its a lit busier.

Havanananana · 23/12/2025 18:23

In 2026 the UK half term does coincide with the start of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is 17th Feb.

Radiatorvalves · 26/12/2025 18:40

The southern French alp resorts aren’t too bad at half term. I avoided for years (after a very busy 3V week).

MeAndMyGhost · 26/12/2025 18:41

Have heard Georgia is pretty good for skiing during Feb half-term.

angelcake20 · 27/12/2025 01:15

We also used to go to Italy, though as PPs have said, Carnevale weekend will be busier. You’d need to avoid anywhere near the Olympics this year as well but the Aosta valley should be fine. We went to La Plagne once at half term and have never been back to France in the decade since. I’ve finally given up
teaching so we can now avoid it!

Mydadsbirthday · 27/12/2025 01:44

We are giving Sierra Nevada a go this February but never been there before.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 01/01/2026 13:27

France is fucking awful at half term. Avoid!!

We found Austria far less crowded so have switched to there if we need to go at half term. Food not so good though!

SirHectorDoolittle · 02/01/2026 12:02

Agree with PPs - avoid France over English half term, it’s murder in the queues and on the piste. We ski in Switzerland over English half term which is noticeably quieter because the Swiss school holidays are staggered. We’ve had 6 or so years in Laax at half term but the warmer seasons are taking their toll - they look after the snow well but there’s no getting away from the fact that it’s too warm. Avoid Films completely, the slopes look like the Sound of Music! Laax fares better but still suffers with lift closures (but still better than queue hell in France!).

bellearbre · 05/01/2026 17:53

We’re going to Norway at half term to avoid the crowds!
