We last skiied in 2019 so it'll have been four years by the time we get out there. I am telling myself this to justify the exorbitant amount I've paid for four of us to go to a vg hotel in Cervinia, our favourite place.

I am never organised with holidays so am really pleased I've managed to do this for once. Gives me lots of time to pay it off, too.

Hooray! This is very exciting news indeed.

We do the same with ski holidays, book it a year in advance and pay it off piecemeal.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 08/04/2022 09:24

we’ve just booked for February half term- it’s so nice to have something special like that to look forward to and being able to spread the costs definitely helps!

RhubarbFairy · 09/04/2022 17:55

We're booked for Christmas. We were supposed to go last Christmas. Booked it 14 months before and had to cancel with 4 weeks notice because they brought in the need to test before flying home. Couldn't risk getting caught out there.

We've paid for the flights already and will pay for ski school/hire in August/September time.
Accommodation is pay on departure so we're squirrelling that away.

I quite fancy Cervinia @Firesidefox. I hear its full of cruisey blues. Is there much in the way of decent self catering apartments there?

Where are you going @Muchtoomuchtodo?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/04/2022 18:46

@RhubarbFairy we’re off to Bardonnechia

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 09/04/2022 19:30

How much are you all paying? I've got a feeling I can't afford it but would love to as I'm a decent skier and my kids are finally old enough to manage it.

RhubarbFairy · 10/04/2022 10:54

@Invasionofthegutsnatchers

We usually factor in about £1000 per person. 2 adults, 2 children.

We've splashed out on accommodation a bit this year, so ours is slightly over that but it breaks down roughly as:

Flights, train, taxi: £550 return. This is choosing to fly to an airport further away because the closer airport was £1000 just for flights.
Accommodation: £2000. Two bed sc apartment, ski in, ski out.
DC Full day lessons + ski hire package for the week: £160 each.
DH & I ski hire: £75 each for the week.
Spending money: Approximately £100 per day.
Ski passes (most expensive element): adults - £214, children - £99 (each)

Total: £4346.

We also buy food for the apartment, but take that from our normal weekly shop budget.

RhubarbFairy · 10/04/2022 11:01

If you did it in term time, you could cut the cost of accommodation in half. We paid £700 for accommodation the week before February half term 2020 at the same resort. DH almost wept when he saw school holiday accommodation prices.

Sunweb do some great deals too if you're flexible about resort. I was tempted by a deal in Flaine on there, but DH was keen to go back to the same resort, and I love it there too so was happy to go with that.

We are going to Austria and DH insisted he didn't want to drive that far, but apparently France is doable by car. That said, I'm not sure if we could have done it much cheaper by car given current fuel prices and needing accommodation en route. Our term time flights were £300 return all in to the closest airport.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/04/2022 20:08

Where are you going @RhubarbFairy?

We’re in a catered chalet- just over £600pp
Flights £700, transfers about £200 (would prefer to use the train but they’re infrequent on Sundays)
No need for lessons,
Kit hire for dc and lift passes for all of us about €500
If the weather allows we’ll take picnics for lunch, otherwise encourage but breakfasts and get back for afternoon tea!

Solasum · 10/04/2022 20:10

Am just back from Cervinia. Bliss! Would love to rent an apartment for a month one winter

Firelogbridge · 10/04/2022 21:41

We've booked for feb half term. Total novices but in the bucket list. We're going to bulgaria. Can't wait!

RhubarbFairy · 11/04/2022 11:32

We're going to Rauris @Muchtoomuchtodo. Little sister of Zell Am See, which is just up the road.

An hour by direct train from Salzburg and then about 10 minutes in a taxi from the station to resort. We're flying into Vienna this year (2 hours direct train from there to Salzburg) because flights to Salzburg were £1000 and flights to Vienna were £400. We've done that train journey before, so we know it's easy and comfortable.

Hooray! We are just back from skiing and are already planning trips for next Christmas and Easter. It's just the most wonderful holiday. We hadn't been since Feb 2020 (lucky to squeeze that one in!) and I think this week just gone was the best family holiday we've ever had. Enjoy when it comes!
