Helmets

Just wondering if any of you use them? Obviously my dd does and friends of mine who ski in USA do. But in FraNCE/Italy it doesn't seem as common (although maybe becoming more common??).

I wear a helmet for biking, horseriding, climbing, etc and common sense tells me I should for skiing. Now if I was a really good skier wizzing down blacks I would feel more deserving of a helmet. But seeing as I am unconfident on reds I think people may snigger seeing me being a crap skier and wearing a helmet. Though I suppose I'm more in need of one as I do fall over quite a lot.

We both wear helmets and have since we started skiing with the kids. We do ski in the US and Canada where it seems more the norm, but friends who ski in Europe are starting to wear them too. I doubt people would snigger, but even if they do you'll never see them again anyway! Helmets are also really warm and frankly no more stupid looking than the hats people wear.

I've seen loads of adults wearing them in recent years and I reckon it will become more and more normal.

Having said that dh and I don't but I suppose we reckon as staid old skiers we don't need one...stoopid eh?.

The dds have always worn helmets and I got one after a snowboarder crashed into me in Meribel.

We both careered about 100m down the slope and it occured to me then that if my head had come into contact with ice, it could've been a lot more serious.

Since then I've had a ski-er crash into me, with his skis ending up bashing my helmeted head - I was extremely glad I had the helmet on.

(I do seem to be a magnet for mad Frenchmen on ski slopes, but not in a good way.

defo agree helmets are a must we went to val last year and someone was killed from a head injury when a skier crashed into them as they were waiting at the bottom of the slope
