Budget will probably dictate but how about Gstaad, Chateau d'Oex, Flims/Laax or Arosa I'm sure there are luxury type hotels there or Lech in Austria is lovely (not too far from Innsbruck) with good beginners slopes. Inghams used to do tailor made packages or look at Kuoni.

Another suggestion is Megeve in France, a very smart resort with some expensive hotels such as www.fermesdemarie.com/. It's about 60mins transfer from Geneva.

not skied Zermatt - you need Anteater's advice ! Although it is lovely, with horse drawn sleighs etc probably not ideal for beginners as the nursery slopes are quite a way up the mountain from the village and it is a fairly big bustling resort. Seefeld is also nice but not as romantic as Lech (would be my first choice tbh!) which is more compact and has slopes right in the village.

this looks like the sort of comapny you're after. Lech is 1 1/4hrs from Innsbruck

Hi,
Zermatt will tick all romantic boxes.
The transfer from Geneva by train is near perfect.. Zermatt is the end of the line.
This resort has more than its fair share of 4* Hotels, we use the Alex, but there are some really romantic spots which encourage couples rather than kids..(Remember those days?)
The mountain huts are to die for.
Suspend all contact with your financial inner self while in this resort.

If you are thinking of Lech, I would opt to pay a touch more and go to Oberlech.. staying half up the mountain. The Goldenerburg is the top spot, we stayed at the Sunnenberg which was lovely.

Good luck

(and report back!!)

thanks people,

shout, where is that intercontinental, I mean which airport do you fly to? It's not actually in a ski resort is it...not that this matters, necessarily...I think these friends fancy a kind of winter wonderland break...with all luxuries thrown in.

anteater, Zermatt also sounds like a good option...they may try a little skiing but i think snow and sleigh rides and spa treatments is really what they fancy...how long by train from Geneva is it? Can you give me more details? It's not for me alas!!

I just had 4 freezing (in fact BELOW freezing) days in andorra before xmas) sunny but by gad it was cold!!

Geneva to Zermatt is between 3 1/2 and 4 hours by train , depends whether direct or you change (at Visp/Brig and/or Taesch I think). Straightforward journey though, you cna prebook seats, and pretty as it follows Lake Geneva then Rhone Valley Timetable info

ooh ta!

You can't fly any closer to Zermatt can you?

As far as I can see only to an airport called sion and then only on Saturdays.

Sion is much closer but flights more limited, transfer about 1 1/2 hours iirc. Bern maybe an alternative now since they've opened a new Lotscheberg (sp?) tunnel, but probably over 2 hours still .

Bern 2 hours 10 ish according to the timetable on my previous post but that is from city not airport (seems up to an hour longer ), Sion 1.50 .

The Intercontinental is 33 miles from Salzberg in Austria, which is another wonderful place to visit but the Crowne Plaza Hotel was really just functional.
