Is anyone feeling nervous about their 21/22 ski trip?

I realise that I'm probably being silly. I fully recognise that covid has made me a bit irrationally anxious about crowds, busy places, etc. So on that note... We have a large and normally busy resort in France booked (booked pre covid and shifted from last year to this). We're going to a catered chalet with DH's family which includes his child free siblings who will want to go out partying.
I'm a bit worried about ski resorts being covid hotbeds this winter (remembering Whistler last year) and what will happen if we end up with it - we won't be able to travel home presumably so where will we stay? Not to mention the possibility of actually getting ill, though DH and I are both vaccinated so I know that's unlikely.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else is having similar thoughts or if I'm being really foolish.

@balzamico

My trip to France via Geneva at the end of January looks really dodgy and tbh I'm not really holding out much hope for my trip with 14 yr old singly vaccinated ds any more either 😢. Two days ago, I was looking forward to both of them "sigh"
If the Swiss are imposing quarantine on UK arrivals, I think the French may not be too long to follow suit unfortunately. I just can't believe it is happening again.
Insertfunnyname · 28/11/2021 03:31

Wow the Swiss have gone in HARD on the restrictions. Maybe it will be a short stint whilst they get the lie of the land.

It’s not sustainable to shut borders AGAIN Shock indefinitely

Bloody covid I am so DONE with it. I really thought we’d get to ski this year.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/11/2021 03:37

Even just doing what the UK is doing, self isolate until result of Day2 test, is going to mess up holidays.

I just want to know now... are we skiing at Christmas or not?

I doubt skiing in Feb half term, never mind Christmas Sad

I am clinging onto now with this new variant they decide to give the 2nd dose to teens and authorise for 5-11 year olds to have the vaccine (as that will be the next problem area )

Fairylights25 · 28/11/2021 05:49

The new variant has now been discovered in the Netherlands, Italy and Germany so closing borders is not going to help very much if it has already seeded around Europe.

We are booked for the 15th of December, and I am so unsure what to do, as I don't want to get there and not be able to get home if the borders suddenly close. We are going into a very remote part of Sweden, and although it looks okay for the moment, everything now feels like it is hanging by a thread everywhere....so decision to make this morning. Do we cut our losses or try and go anyway?

PlinkPlankPlunk · 28/11/2021 07:28

So presumably the “3 weeks later” review mentioned yesterday will muck up any Christmas holiday trips, as everything could change again on about 19th December. Argghh -so sick of this!

I think the Swiss will find soon that they already have omicron in their country anyway and then they can’t very well keep up the quarantine requirement for travellers from all the other countries where it’s been detected, can they? We’ll see…
OhCobblers · 28/11/2021 09:22

Our trip to France included our flights in and out of Geneva?
IF it still goes ahead will our agent need to put us on a flight in and out of France instead?

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 28/11/2021 09:43

I haven't read the Swiss regulations @OhCobblers, but is there an exemption for those in transit?

reallyagain · 28/11/2021 10:01

Some countries have exemptions for transit and some don't, you'd need to check when they clarify

Rollergirl11 · 28/11/2021 10:09

Still don’t know what’s happening with DD’s school ski trip to France. Nothing more been reported from school since France announced daily testing required for the Pass Sanitaire and now isolating until results of Day 2 test that now has to be PCR. They get back late on 23rd December so huge potential for spoiling our Christmas Day plans with family.

reallyagain · 28/11/2021 10:36

So horrible for them all rollergirl with the uncertainty. Such a shame for teenagers they've missed out on so much already

Not sure, but I think if you are going straight to France then French rules apply. However, I bet some of the flights into Switzerland from UK will now be cancelled.

Its a bloody nightmare.

OhCobblers · 28/11/2021 14:03

Took this from the Gov.Uk website under the Switzerland bit

Quarantine
From 8pm on 27 November, travellers arriving from the UK must self-quarantine for 10 days on arrival in Switzerland, including if transiting through Switzerland to another country.

Schulte · 28/11/2021 14:06

That’s a bit rich! I bet Switzerland already has omicron cases too.

abricotine · 28/11/2021 14:29

The U.K. ambassador to Switzerland has confirmed on the embassy’s Facebook page that you can’t transit through Geneva (unless an exception applies eg you are headed back to your home in a Schengen country).

abc345 · 28/11/2021 15:27

Aargh I thought our choice of December skiing in Switzerland over France was looking hopeful.

Presumably there's very little likelihood of the Swiss government reversing the U.K. quarantine in the next week or so if the Omicron variant transpires to be already prevalent in Switzerland and neighbours, or less dangerous than first thought?

artquejtion · 28/11/2021 16:51

The government covid policy was passed today, so I guess there will be more updates during the week.

reallyagain · 28/11/2021 17:25

I can't see it being any less prevalent among Switzerland's neighbours than in the UK

Hairyhat · 28/11/2021 19:24

If you had booked Austria for end of December 2021, would you cancel now or try and wait to see what happens?
I'm fully jabbed but my 11 year old isn't. Does anyone know if they have to have negative LFTs to use ski lifts and restaurants etc?
I am so confused and lost about it all. I understand the trip looks unlikely now but could things change for the better by then after this lockdown? (I know Mumsnet has crystal ball users Grin)
What would seasoned skiers do in my position please?
(We are desperate to go as it's a huge deal to us)

Hairyhat · 28/11/2021 19:49

I suppose none has any idea. I'm clutching at straws to give my dc a trip of a lifetime (for us). We aren't usually able to afford skiing holidays.

reallyagain · 28/11/2021 20:00

I wouldn't cancel yet unless you'll definitely lose money waiting

NutellaEllaElla · 28/11/2021 20:03

I have an Austria ski trip booked for early Feb. I won't cancel. If we're not allowed in then they can cancel us at their cost. Hopefully.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 28/11/2021 20:06

I do have Austria booked for December. This is the fourth time it's been moved it since April 2020. I'm not cancelling it, but in all honesty I'm not holding out much hope.
