When are we likely to be able to ski again do you think?

As in travel to ski if you don’t happen to live on the slopes!

Assume drive to resort will be more popular once they do open if flights are still tricky but quarantine rules will make it impossible whilst they stay at 2 weeks either side.

Wishing I lived in France!

We have an apartment in the French Alps and the agency who rents it out for us have already asked for our family dates for next season as they are expecting huge demand as flights are now on sale.... So I would say sooner rather than later...The quarantine thing won't last for long in my view.

massistar · 19/05/2020 12:29

Haven't they already said that UK-France travel is exempt from quarantine?

massistar · 19/05/2020 12:30

I've booked flights for half term 2021 so am very hopeful it'll be ok by then.

symbioticpatriot · 20/05/2020 01:47

It’s less about quarantine than about concerns that social distancing will be with us for some time. This makes cable cars and gondolas (and to an extent busy chairlifts) impossible to run at reasonable capacity, not to mention mountain restaurants. I am very hopeful we will not miss out entirely next year but I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion yet.

Vail resorts is offering us money off our season pass for next season based on unused days this year. A friend reports the same from Ikon. That covers most well known North American resorts so they’re obviously confident. We can drive to Colorado but it’s long: 15+ hours not counting stops. We have to move from the US back to the U.K. by February but DH wants to leave until the last possible moment purely to get an easy self drive ski trip or two in first...

SkiYetiMagic · 20/05/2020 10:33

I've been looking into this recently and have decided for now im going to play it safe and only look beyond Feb although I may change my mind depending on how things unravel. This is being super cautious.

I also think aviation will change massively and prices will go up a lot on flights once they get on their feet again. A lot of people wil prob want to do self drive too.

On a positive tip, Slovenia have said they consider themselves over the pandemic and have already opened up one of their resorts last week :-) Lets hope other countries are not too far behind.

Africa2go · 20/05/2020 21:41

We'd already booked for Christmas (Austria), got everything crossed it'll happen.

justmyview · 22/05/2020 14:10

I agree with @symbioticpatriot that social distancing will be a challenge. I also think that flights and travel insurance will become very expensive, so the cost will deter many people from skiing

Perhaps self catering will become more popular, if people don't want to sit in a communal hotel dining room

Have a quote for italy next feb and just waiting for info on their cancellation policy but think i am going to book it ....

symbioticpatriot · 29/05/2020 19:21

I’ve seen some resorts I follow opening gondolas, chairs and bike parks soon for summer season and I think this is a really positive development. Albeit lower summer numbers will make it easier to manage distancing at that time of year. Nevertheless, it’s good 🤞🏼

LeGrandBleu · 07/06/2020 21:00

I am hesitating because of likely huge queues if social distancing still in place

stringbean · 20/06/2020 10:52

We have booked accommodation for next Easter: we had a credit from cancelled holiday this year and we can't really use it anywhere else, so have booked and are taking a chance that everything will be open.

Having said that, it seems everyone else is taking a chance too: the accommodation only became available for booking just over a week ago, and the date we wanted is already full: fortunately we can do a Sun-Sun booking so have opted for that instead. Last year we booked in September and there was still plenty of availability, so I think it says a lot that people are in need of something to look forward to.
