Craziest thing you've seen on the slopes?

Coming to the end of our first weeks skiing and I've seen some crazy things on the slopes. I mean, the snowboarding unicorn was a fantastic sight to follow, but other stuff has been batshit.

In the last two days, on blues I've seen:

Ski bikes - they look fucking lethal
A mum with a baby in a sling on her back (yesterday and today, she overtook me today, I am Captain Slow)
A mum skiing ahead, holding her pole behind her, her approximately 2 year old on tiny skis holding the other end, and dad holding onto reins that were looped around her waist.

The snowboarder who belted off the end of the run into the soft fence at the pub at the middle station today was pretty funny to watch. He got up with a sheepish grin.

I saw a pantomime cow on skis (as in 2 people in a cow costume, both on skis) in Austria once. That was different!

JontyDoggle37 · 21/02/2020 19:09

I have been the skier who skied into the ski lift station and stopped on the platform. I was too grateful I stopped before I fell off the platform to be embarrassed 😁

Skigal86 · 27/02/2020 08:08

A Roman army band marching up the escalator in the lift station in Austria. It was Fasching though, so anything goes Grin

I wasn’t there (before my time) but my dad once skied onto the roof of a mountain restaurant, that’d probably be a bit mad if you’d witnessed it!

The little one on reins holding a pole isn’t that unusual I don’t think.

TeetotalKoala · 27/02/2020 23:37

@Skigal86 Even if some of the blue bits were fairly steep?

I would pay money to watch a pantomime cow on skis.

People skiing with kids on their shoulders or in a sling. Absolutely nuts. You may be a fantastic skiier but you never know when you'll be taken out by someone else.

Insaneinthemembury · 27/02/2020 23:45

I saw a Dad skiing with his kid in a child carrier behind him! He was skiing fast than me and I'm not that slow!

Skigal86 · 28/02/2020 06:08

@TeetotalKoala at least they had some control of them! When I was about 12 I got taken out by a toddler on a red who was just going straight down! Shock

VivaLeBeaver · 28/02/2020 06:20

I have been the skier who skied into the ski lift station and stopped on the platform

I purposefully try and do that, consider it a victory if I make it! 😆😆

We went skiing a few weeks ago with a friend who had never skied before. He is almost 6ft 10 and weighs 138kg. On the first day he skied straight into me. That was rather terrifying, I was like a little cockroach trapped under him.
The next day he skied very fast into the “please slow down” sign which wrapped itself around him like a loo roll and then he careered off onto a red run with about 10 ESF instructors flying after him trying to unravel him.
Genuinely one of the funniest things I have ever seen

Some Amish girls in Breckinridge, with their long dress and headscarfs flapping wildly.

frequencykenneth · 28/02/2020 11:25

Now Amish girls, that's cool!
When we used to go to the big French resorts at Easter I saw too many uni students with stupid group costumes to mention. Always British and often skiing dangerously.
I now go to a family friendly Swiss resort that not many Brits have heard of these days. The standard of skiing is excellent and there is none such silliness!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/02/2020 19:48

Skiing in Cyprus.

Everything was crazy. The sanest people were the British soldiers plus families.

Windyone · 28/02/2020 19:51

@GenevaMaybe that sounds dangerous not funny. I hope he was having lessons and not just let loose on the slopes

GenevaMaybe · 28/02/2020 19:55

Yes he was having lessons...poor instructor was 1/3 the size of him Grin. He played rugby for England and has had his left knee reconstructed twice so couldn’t do his snow plough. They taught him some modified way to slow down/stop so by the third day he had the hang of it

My parents skiied with me in a backpack as a baby- and I lived!!!

I got on a chairlift once with a man who had jeans on, a jumper, swimming goggles and knitted gloves. Certainly not ski attire! On the lift journey, it turns out that he'd just got off the bus, friend had clipped his skies on and pushed him onto the lift chair.
As we approached the tower, I explained to wait till I got off, plenty of time, it will slow etc etc. He was too eager and forced the protective bar on the chair lift up, and jumped from the chair before we'd even got completely into the station! He fell, then chair continued over him (with me sitting in it) while he slid down a very steep concrete incline at the side of the station, then fell backwards into the protective netting underneath! I think he was ok, but the lift was stopped for ages whilst they de-tangled him out from the netting!

Oh blimey @GenevaMaybe I’ve just nearly bounced my dog off onto the floor who was sleeping on me ready yours whilst laughing 😂 she is not amused

I once stood in awe watching a blind skier and her guide whoosh down the mountain behind me. Incredible.

Also, once we were skiing about 15 years ago and DH fell over and managed to dislocate his kneecap. An Italian skier stopped, popped it back into place and DH was able to ski back down to the lift. Never had any adverse issues with it, had never happened before, has never happened since.

bestbefore · 28/02/2020 20:29

We saw some lads this year skiing in their towelling dressing gowns and not much on underneath...perhaps pants!

Elouera · 28/02/2020 20:38

I had a well loved pair of ski boots that I'd worn for 15yrs. As I skiied down the hill, I noticed they were loose and 'cracking'. As I continued, the entire outer shells of both boots decided it was time to completely fall apart. By the time I got to the bottom, I was left with the inner, sponge part and only the very bottom of the boots left clipped into the bindings!

Notwiththeseknees · 15/03/2020 00:32

Saw the PGHM helicopter drop one of their guys down on the line with a large Alsatian attached to them.

mrbob · 10/07/2020 14:41

A bunch of Buddhist monks tobogganing

deste · 03/12/2020 22:05

A BMW being lowered on to the snow in front of a mountain restaurant. We later saw it on tv on an add.

deste · 03/12/2020 22:06

Was lowered from a helicopter meant to say.

SkiingIsHeaven · 03/12/2020 22:19

Blind skiers!

They followed someone with a loud radio in his rucksack.

Utterly in awe of them.
