Various friends have recommended it. Our previous (french) resort was very small and comfortable for the novices in our family - that's me!

What's should one expect from avoriaz?

It's quite big and not terribly pretty but there's a really good range of skiing and of restaurants too.

Yep. What User said. It's a fab base. Lots of skiing from there although the lifts can get very busy.

It’s a purpose built resort so not pretty at all. But good facilities (pool, shops, restaurants) and is high enough for decent snow.

Avoriaz is a purpose built resort on the mountain, so limited in terms of shops. restaurants etc. I would recommend Morzine which is the main town below, unless you just want a couple of days of ski in ski out.

Good for late in season. Good for ski in ski out and self catering apartments. Extensive ski area. Not good for traditional alpine charm or chalets (think there are a few).

Avoriaz is great for families as it tends to be ski-in-ski out, it's quite high so snow sure, set up for families and is linked to huge ski area which is less busy than places like three valleys. There is a really big water park/pool place there the kids will like too called Aquariaz.

If you are used to a small resort I think you will find Avoriaz quite busy particularly at weekends. It is popular with locals at weekends and also absorbs a lot of traffic from Morzine particularly if snow is not so good lower down. But the snow tends to be good in Avoriaz and there is a good range of skiing except maybe for the true beginner as those areas are pretty busy and also used by faster skiers as a thoroughfare. Fine for early improvers though. Agree it’s not for those who prefer their ski resorts picturesque!
