We're going to Les Gets for a week on 16th December, and this is how the snow cams look at the moment.

Weather forecast suggests there won't be any snow before the end of this week. It's not looking good is it?! Does anyone have a particular recommendation for ski insurance co that has the best payout if the lifts aren't running because of lack of snow? They're still expecting to open the resort on 17th...

Don't know of any particular insurers for that (we get ours via the ski hire place. Often the 'no snow' comes with a clause of 'for xx days' too. Going on J2's update they are expecting a small fall on the 11th.

It may be worth either upgrading/purchasing a full PdS pass when you get there and hopping over to Chatel or Avoriaz for actual skiing though if conditions haven't changed. One of the best places I've come across for updates is Snowheads. They have a PdS thread in the weather section there that's regularly updated by the local ex-pats.

In fact, thread here! Unless you sign-up though you won't see posting dates. Last post on page 3 was today.

Conditions can change so quickly we stayed in morzine 4 years ago the afternoon we arrived not even a sprinkle of snow in the town and thermometer reading 16 degrees, woke up the next morning to a foot of fresh snow! Plenty of runs up on the glacier in avoriaz that will be accessible for you and pretty much guaranteed snow up there so I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks - we have PdS passes as there was an offer where you got the kids pass free for an adult all area. I'll keep an eye on the Snowheads thread and cross my fingers! If all else fails, ice skating every day... :D

You need to buy insurance when you book though. No one is going to pay out on insurance that you bought because conditions didn't appear.

I've checked the insurance we got with our bank account (one if those all in ones) and in fact it does cover for piste closure if necessary so phew. Really hoping the temps get to freezing so they can do some snow cannons.

Will keep fingers' crossed for you!

How is it looking now? We are hoping to go that week too but conditions seem pretty poor throughout.

JumpJockey · 11/12/2016 18:44

Still pretty green everywhere and no great sign of snow to come :( apparently Avoriaz is the most likely to have decent skiing if some kind so that's where we're likely to end up going. Bit of a faff but better than no skiing at all!

We went to Les Gets for Christmas 2 years ago, & were told in advance "no snow"...on arrival at the airport we hired a car & drove to Avoriaz every day (included in full area lift pass) & had a great week of skiing...it dumped in Les Gets on our last day..

trixymalixy · 01/01/2017 20:32

How was it?

JumpJockey · 06/01/2017 16:36

In the end I think we were pretty lucky - there was enough in Les Gets for the kids to have their ski lessons (one and half pistes and a single chair lift...) and the company took us over to Avoriaz where there was a decent amount available. We stuck to blues and concentrated on technique and vin chaud breaks Grin rather than the usual bombing down it approach, more relaxed. According to the snowheads forum the Christmas week was pretty awful - slopes very full, lots of accidents as the snow got scraped off and it ended up pretty icy. They've got snow in Les Gets now, still not much open but it should be better from now on. We had a great week all in all!
