Morzine or Avoriaz with a baby. Help please!

Hoping for some advice. My partner has persuaded me to go on a last minute snowboarding holiday against my better judgement. We’re basically gatecrashing some friends’ holiday so have about two weeks to prepare. I’ve been snowboarding twice but not for a couple of years so am a total amateur and am wondering whether I will bother with it this holiday.

The issue is we will be taking our 9 month old and I’m wondering what I can do for a week with her if I don’t do any snowboarding. Our friends are staying in Morzine and my partner is keen to book in Avoriaz but I’m not convinced. Any advice on which of these places would be better for us and also what we can do to keep ourselves entertained!

Logistics in Avoriaz are a little challenging with luggage etc as its a car free resort. There is snow everywhere and lots of different levels so I would say difficult to get around with a 9 month old. There is cool pool, Acquarius which is good but Morzine also has a much more basic pool.

Morzine is a town, easier to get a buggy around on cleared pavements, shops to browse etc.

Plus the traffic up to Avoriaz today was unbelievable!!! It is possible to go up in the Prodains gondola but I am not sure that rapid change in altitude is recommended for children that young.

If your friends are in Morzine, I would go for Morzine.

Nanny service in case you need it. They are always amazing.

I'd go to Morzine. Much more family friendly. You can always do a day in Avoriaz.

I would definitely go for Morzine. Hopefully the weather will have sorted itself out by then. But there has been storm after storm this season and at least you can get a bit of shelter in the evenings in Morzine rather than a constant battering of wind in Avoriaz.
Morzine will also be much easier to get around with a little one (pushchair rather than sledge, flatter) and I think you'll find quieter cafes etc. during the daytime if you head away from the lifts.

Personally I'd choose Les Gets.

Morzine over Avoriaz definitely, though personally also prefer Les Gets.

Happy memories of pulling my McKaren buggy about on the snow at the top of the main Morzine gondola with a 5 month old in. We used a nanny service who came to our chalet. I skied in the morning and played/ went up the mountain for coffee and hot chocolate/ pottered about in town in the afternoons. Think Morzine will be easier with baby and you can easily get up to Avoriaz from Morzine for a few days of higher snow.

Definitely Morzine and nanny. I did this for a few years while the children were younger.

Morzine gets my vote too!

Have no advice, just posting to say when I first glanced at this I thought it was a baby name thread. Was working out how to most gently phrase "Please don't name your baby Morzine or Avoriaz!"

I haven't been to Morzine with a baby, but i have stayed there a couple of times, and I can see that if you can find good accommodation and childcare, it would be a good resort for a little one.

As far as Avoriaz is concerned, though, if you wanted to go there for the day, it's a bit tricky for a snowboarder who isn't all that advanced. There's lots of long flattish paths to get to the centre of the resort. We went there one day with my DC the first year DS learnt to snow board, and we spent a lot of energy towing him (we were skiing).

If your friends are in Morzine, surely you would want to stay there, so you could meet up for a drink after skiing (baby permitting!)?

We took DD at 8 months on a ski trip and it was a nice break. I used a creche for a couple of days so I could do a bit of snowboarding. The other days we pottered around the town going for hot choc in cafes, exploring the town, and a fair bit of chilling out in the hotel and snoozing while the baby napped! After we'd been there a while we even took a gondola up to the top of the area so I could see the views. DD was fine going up with her dummy (went when quiet and was prepared to give a quick feed if it looked like she wasn't able to equalise the pressure but didn't need to) and got some cool photos of us at the top of the mountain. Depending on how icy/slippy conditions are I actually preferred using a front baby carrier and backpack rather than the pushchair most of the time...

Morzine is quite hilly, though (the town, I mean) so a sling or a sled would be much easier than a buggy, I think.

Thanks everyone for the replies, it's much appreciated and they've helped me in persuading DP to go for Morzine over Avoriaz. We've manged to book a room in the same chalet as our friends which should be great.
I don't know Les Gets at all but will consider it for future holidays.
Now to do some baby thermals shopping!
And Cel982 I think baby Avoriaz has a nice ring to it, don't you think?!

We went to Morzine when our DS was 1 and 2 and used the local nursery L'Outa for him in the mornings. We were very happy with them and he was happy enough going. We used to pick him up about 1pm which gave us the chance to ski in the morning and then spend afternoons with him. I think Morzine is s good choice for families.
