Clam...that's all very well if you don't have slidy things strapped to your feet...

I had a slidy things strapped to my behind though - a bloody mountain bike! Grin Skis might have been a safer bet, actually.

We're off to the Southern Alps for half term. Not looking brilliant there either. I believe there was a dump of snow today, so around a metre of snow up the top of the mountains, but not wonderful. Still, a lot can happen in 4 weeks.

Last week, conditions were poor in Les Gets and Morzine but there is 20cm of snow due this weekend and more due next weekend.

The resort were working hard and keeping what little snow was around on the pistes, but it was icy and there were bushes showing through on the steep black slopes. It will take a lot of snow for it to recover. I would recommend getting advice on what pistes are good to avoid the really thinly covered ones. However.... This weekend could change all that!!!

And, it was a completely different story in Avoriaz and the higher slopes of Champery, Chatel etc. if you have already bought Les Gets Morzine passes, you might be able to negotiate exchanging them for PdeS passes and many of the tour operators have negotiated this on behalf of their clients. The slopes were lovely and the snow was good.

You can take the super morzine up into Avoriaz but I prefer to drive to the Prodains and go straight into the middle of the resort.

This has been the slowest start to a season I can remember in years.

What clam said.

Avoriaz should be ok though. We spent a season on Morzine and nearly always headed over to Avoriaz because no matter how good the conditions were on the Pleney side, they'd be better in Avoriaz.

We're off tomorrow. I'll try to give an update during the week.

Smokey, and all others, I'm off to Les Gets in two weeks too.
Hadn't realised snow was that bad, the forecast I looked at today (only iphone) had snow for most days this week so fingers crossed.
We've stayed in Morzine the last two years and skied equally the two sides, so it'll be frustrating if we keep having to head over to Avoriaz from Les Gets this year.

If it helps, we got back from Courchevel 1650 yesterday and had a brilliant week. The pisteurs did an excellent job keeping most pistes in great condition. DH and I being ancient, stayed on the 1650 slopes, beautiful corduroy, DSs and DSG enjoyed excellent conditions and tougher runs in Val Thorens and 1850. We had been very worried in advance, particularly when the transfer rep told us conditions were 'dire' and we could not ski back to the resort. Absolute nonsense! Turned out she was new and could not ski. There was a huge dump on Saturday, so anyone heading to the 3 Valleys in the next couple of weeks should have nothing to worry about.

Thanks, Clam. Yes the room situation sorted itself out once dear GF1 decided she could not come because of the new job and the holiday being so close on the heels of the visit to her home country with DS1. We fitted nicely into three double rooms. GF2 enjoyed her lessons and got on well, and DS2 took her out a couple of times in the afternoon when he returned from further afield. Our friend, the one who insists on having a single room, was annoyed that he had to pay the equivalent of two people for his double room, i.e. no reduction to reflect the fact that only one air fare was involved. Otherwise pretty trouble free all round after all the advance angst. If anyone wonders what Clam and I are referring to, here is the relevant info. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/2248261-OK-maybe-I-am-a-stingy-tight-wad-of-a-MIL-what-do-you-think?msgid=51057240

Can I ask where you are checking out for info re piste condition and depth of snow etc?

My DH came back from Morzine yesterday...he'd been on snow-watch for a while before he went and in the end there were a few slopes that were closed and they had to go to a higher resort to ski on a couple of days but there was heavy snow over this weekend.

Tricky, I have just read that thread and cannot believe how patient and calm you are! I would have totally lost my rag with all the nutters on there. I'm glad it all worked out ok in the end. FWIW, I would hope to be going on many more years of skiing holidays with my DC (aged 5 and 7) and paying for them if I could afford it even when they are adults.

Has anyone been to puy st Vincent this season? We're off there in a couple of weeks and worrying a bit about the snow cover.
