Late April skiing - destination recommendations

Hi, we had a nice first family ski holiday at half term, but I've got the bug and I want more ( this time without DH or DS and with some female friends so I can get a bit more skiing in).

We'd be flying to Geneva, so anywhere anyone can recommend within a couple of hours transfer from there? I've had a look at Tignes, thought that should be ok as high altitude, anywhere else that fits the bill?

TIA.

Alpe d'Huez? It's nearer to Grenoble, but I don't think a transfer from Geneva would be too bad.

Just googled - its lifts are open until 26 April, and as it's a ski d'ete destination, there should be a reasonable amount in skiable condition.

Les Gets
Lovely family resort
Ski Famille run holidays with childcare there (among other places)

VivaLeBeaver · 28/02/2014 13:45

PI was going to say Tignes.

rookiemater · 28/02/2014 13:56

Ah that's interesting Alpe d'huez is in fact closer to Geneva airport than Tignes. Mind you as we would be heading out on the 25th - we'd only get one days skiing before it shuts.

Maybe I just need to face the fact that it's too late in the year to head out, sigh.

Avoriaz is not far from Geneva and is very high - should be ok for late April

meditrina · 28/02/2014 14:45

Avoriaz/Portes de Soleil lifts are open until 27 April.

meditrina · 28/02/2014 14:48

This page let's you search by season end date. I was seeing if any of the higher Swiss resorts might still be open, but it looks like they're mainly over by 21st.

Of you could wait a bit longer and go to Tasmania?

rookiemater · 28/02/2014 17:39

Avoriaz is close to Geneva, but am starting to think that the last weekend of skiing for any resort is a bit risky.
meditrina - Tasmania is a little bit out of the way for a long weekend, tempting though it is Grin !

Val Thorens is usually open until May - it's the highest resort in the Alps.

juneau · 28/02/2014 17:52

Here you go: Val Thorens - 23rd November 2013 to 11th May 2014

BikeRunSki · 28/02/2014 17:53

Whistler is usually open til June....Wink

rookiemater · 28/02/2014 17:54

Ahhh, thank you juneau - 2.5 hrs transfer so just about doable, let me see what I can find.

Val Thorens, Val d'isere or Tignes would be my shortlist

mumbaisapphirebluespruce · 28/02/2014 17:59

Not Europe, but it's still stupid cold here inToronto, Canada. And probably will be until bloody June the way this winter has gone! You should look at Mont Tremblant and flights to Montreal if this interests you.

ElaClaw · 28/02/2014 18:08

The amount of Snow we have at the Scottish resorts we will be skiing into May (probably...)

newgirl · 28/02/2014 18:11

Val disere - some of the places listed above would not have good snow cover then - you need to be 3000m really

magicberry · 28/02/2014 21:28

Some of the Austrian resorts - Obergurgl, Ischgl?

rookiemater · 01/03/2014 14:49

Thanks - am thinking I might just leave it until next year, hoping to go to Glenshee with DS next Fri as they have a special day off school, so that might help with the ski fix.

ElaClaw · 01/03/2014 17:44

See, I told you Scotland was the place to be ;)

Let me know how Glenshee is as we are planning a trip there soon :)
