help! what do i need?!

I'm a nanny and am going to Austria on a skiing holiday with the family I work for, I won't he skiing but will be out sledging etc with my charges. I've never been able to even consider going on a holiday like this before, I feel like I'm completely out of my depth with lots of stupid questions! What do I wear? I bought a ski jacket and snow boots at my bosses suggestion - do I just wear those with my usual 'everyday' clothes on top? Do people just wear skiwear all the time? Can someone fill me in so I don't feel so stupid? blush

While you could wear your normal clothes plus a ski jacket, I would imagine you'd get pretty cold - particularly if you get wet from the snow, which I would say is pretty likely if you're taking your charges sledging. Will the children have proper snow suits? If so, then they'll probably be quite happy to play outside but you'll be shivering! Personally I prefer to wear ski clothing just for its waterproof qualities more than anything else. Could you borrow some ski trousers from anyone? I know that when we were out and about wearing jeans, my legs were very cold.

Other than that, I would also recommend that you wear plenty of layers - thermals if you have them, but just normal t-shirts will do if not - with a couple more layers on top. And do have a decent pair of gloves - again, waterproof would help as you'll inevitably get wet hands. My kids are like snow magnets, so I spend a lot of time dusting snow off them, hence the wet hands. And a hat - make sure you have a hat as that can make you feel nearly human again!

Decent gloves are a must. It's probably a good idea to take some salopettes (ski trousers) a fleece and some thermals. Sports direct and decathlon are good value.

You'll also need sunglasses and sun screen.

You'll need some sort of waterproof/ski trousers if sledging as may be slushy.

Take a backpack for carrying stuff, to keep your hands free for the sledging.

As you are sledging with the children I would suggest layers.
Sunglasses, lip balm with spf, vest, long sleeve top, jumper (but you might not need to wear it), ski coat, warm socks and waterproof trousers. You could get ski trousers but if you will only be sledging then waterproof trouers would be ok as long as you have leggings to wear underneath. Waterproof gloves. I would reccommend www.dare2b.co.uk they have a clearance sale on at the moment. Hat too.
During the day most people will wear ski clothing but if not doing snow sports then normal clothes but snowboots instead of shoes.

Thank you all. I'be ordered a few bits of clothes to add to the packing heap and although I have some waterproof trousers will get some ski trousers if I can find some cheap enough!

ask around or check charity shops. If you know any skiers they may lend you some gear, it only gets used one week a year.

oh, and the obvious one that caught me the first time - you need suitable shoes for walking round when you are not skiing/sledging. Leave all heels etc at home, you want waterproof trainers, walking boots or snow boots (the latter only work in snow, useless in rain)
