All-in-one ski sues or separates for kids

About to buy some kids ski gear. The snow suits are much cheaper and I'd imagine warmer, but separate jacket and salopeetes may be more useful for wearing the jacket in resort or travelling in. What do all you MNers put your kids in and why? Am dithering over this one and need to buy before they sell out.

How old ? I preferred an all-in-one on an under 5 but with skischool it is easier for them to manage toilet breaks etc with a jacket/salopettes. There isn't much difference warmth wise but a suit prevents snow going up the back when sledding or rolling in snow !

5 and in ski school- I never thought about toilet breaks.

Our kids have both. For separates, a good idea is to look for a jacket with a "snow skirt" which stops the snow getting up your back and makes the jacket a bit warmer.

Our kids have just learned to go to the toilet immediately before ski school and they have rarely needed the toilet in the following 3 hours.

Without sounding daft when you say your kids have both, does that mean you take both with you or have just tried both out on separate occasions?

No they wear both, not at the same time, they are very good at getting them soaking wet or muddy or both. They wear the jacket when travelling, to save on space. I bought mega cheap 2 pieces from Montain Warehouse and 1 peices from Decathlon. With 4 children, I don't mind the extra expense of having 2 lots of skiing clothes, they get handed down and get lots of wear.

I think the all in ones might actually be easier for toilet breaks for little ones as you just take the whole lot off. If you have trousers with braces you still need to remove the jacket.

Ours started in all in one and then moved to trousers and jackets - but that was mainly due to getting stuff in sales than any real planning!

If they have one piece then they will need extra jacket for evening. Unless you intend not to go out.

Ok have ordered the all-in-one but DC will just wear normal anorak to travel in and in evening, unless I find a bargain ski jacket too. The one piece is from Decathalon, they have some great prices and you can order online now. Thanks for your help.

DS1 had one all-in-one, and after that my two always had separates

• jacket could be worn separately e.g. cold weather in UK/ en route etc
• then took two pairs of salopettes, as DS1 used to avoid going to the toilet when in kids ski club and sometimes had 'accidents' when he was about 3-4. Easier then to wash a pair of salopettes rather than a whole ski suit.
• TBH I think the all-in-ones are more hassle for them when they go to the loo, 'cos if you're not careful, the top bit drags along the wet smelly floor
• Also the suits can be a bit of a pain when you go to e.g. a mountain chalet for lunch, as it will be hot inside, and you can't take your jacket bit off without it hanging behind you!
