Why is the text all spidery and horrible?

I have changed my browser from IE to Google Chrome, and have selected Mumsnet New. I thought this would represent a step into a bold new future or something, but my page looks horrid. Thin, nasty text, and I have to zoom in to avoid big white spaces at the sides.

The old way I had it in IE, the text was pleasingly chunky and calm. But I like Chrome because it doesn't have a irritating quarter page of toolbars- tell me though, why has it made the page so unpleasant?

Or am I just an old gimmer who will never adapt?

Thanks Lenin- I am going to shuffle back to crappy ol' Internet Explorer, I think. It is clearly all I deserve. Perhaps spectacles for reading will be next?
