If you find that you keep making mistakes typing in links, here is something to help:

1 At the bottom of the thread there is a yellow box. Highlight the bold \ link{url\description} then use the mouse to drag it into your message (no need to cut and paste).

2 Open up another window (File, New Window) and go to the site to which you want to link.

3 Click on the url and it will be highlighted.

4 Do Edit, Copy or else hit CTRL C.

5 Go back to the Mumsnet window and your message. Highlight the word url and do Edit, Paste or else hit CTRL V.

6 Highlight the word description and overtype the description.

Bob's your uncle.

If you're not sure of yourself, click on Preview conversation to check the link.

I'm not a very clever on computers, I know the basics but thats about it! But, I can do links so it is easy!

This is how I do them:

Have 2 windows open (mumsnet and the one you want to do the link for)

type \link{

go to the page you want to link and right click in the adress box and select copy.

Come to the mumsnet window and after the { right click and select paste.

After that, type \ followed by whatever name you want to give your link. I usually just type here but it can be whatever you want. If you want a space between words, use _ instead of a space.

Give it a few trys and remember to preview before you post to make sure it works.

kid that sounds easier than how I do it currently...

Fimbo · 08/08/2005 13:41

spacecadet · 08/08/2005 13:42

ive just done a link!, i went to the yellow box, cut and paste description and then opened another window and cut and paste the web page, then just deleted the word url and paste the web page, then deleted the word description and typed what i wanted, it took 2 tics!

kid · 08/08/2005 13:43

biglips · 08/08/2005 13:44

kid · 08/08/2005 13:45

spacecadet · 08/08/2005 13:45

then open another window and cut a nd paste the web address
then delete the word url, replace it with your website
then delete the wors description, replace it with what you want to say.

spacecadet · 08/08/2005 13:46

handlemecarefully · 08/08/2005 13:59

Okay Fimbo, I'll humiliate myself and tell you how I do it

I print out the web page I want to link to so that I have got the web address reference at the bottom of the printed out page, and then I painstakingly copy type the address for example "www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=threadid1234 - etc, etc" (after of course typing in \link{

I bet I'm not the only thicko!

biglips · 08/08/2005 13:59

doh - ive found the yellow box! as ive never knew that was yellow, thought it was white till now

description

biglips · 08/08/2005 14:00

Fimbo · 08/08/2005 14:05

HMC don't be , I only learned how to do it, with help from Giraffeski and Tammybear, in fact I think I hi-jacked their thread!! I couldn't make head nor tail of the mumsnet directions in the box.

Well done BigLips

biglips · 08/08/2005 14:08

blimey - that was complicated!!! i had to read Pretty candles thread over and over again

steffee · 08/08/2005 14:56

have a look at this

Sorry, just the BBC news above. I copy the whole of the bottom line in the yellow box and change the url bit to whatever I want, so this thread will be here

handlemecarefully · 08/08/2005 15:03

this is cute. It's like an on line teaching session.

madmarchhare · 08/08/2005 15:07

fabsite

madmarchhare · 08/08/2005 15:07

Ooo, ooo - have I done it?

PrettyCandles · 08/08/2005 21:08

Spacecadet put it much more simply than I did!

Yeah, it does sound complicated, but once you get the hang of it it's easy and you're much less likely to make mistakes than if you try to type \link{etc.
