hasn't this gone far enough? these threads are being allowed to stand which considering the "policies" of the BNP and the views expressed by "activists" is appalling. yes, free speech is wonderful, but some of these threads can be seen as inciting racial hatred, there are many, many, disablist, homophobic, racist remarks made and implied and they always go the same way. the threads are started to cause a bunfight. the BNP will not get anymore supporters on here, so why be deliberately controversial?

mn is a self-moderated site. this is great and one of the reasons i use it. however, the mners are now moderating and saying that we have had enough. we have complained a LOT about this type of thing - please take note!

My googling on the subject of the 'don't argue with fools' subject has produced the following - some of which may be relevant

"If you argue with a fool, you will leave the argument feeling like a fool." (budhist monk)

A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.

Any fool can know. The point is to understand. ? Albert Einstein

Do not attribute to malice what can as easily be attributed to stupidity.

Don?t argue with a fool. The spectators can?t tell the difference.

TheShriekingHarpy I think you miss the point beautifully.
you can bu all means choose to like to hear vile views.
I would like to choose not to thanks.
I don't come on MN to hear the rantings ofpro BNP posters, who give nothing back.this is a supportive site, it has taken a lot to wind people up to this extreme.........
so read the thread.

I don't think anyone chooses to like to hear vile views, it's more a case of recognising that freedom to have and express whatever views you hold applies to all or to no-one. However, I do think everyone should understand it's a privilege as well as a right, and that responsibilities go with it.

elliemental · 13/05/2010 15:46

shrieking, it's not as easy as ''hide the thread''. These viewpoints have been popping up in all sorts of threads, not ones specifically started about, say, the BNP.

CurbAppeal · 13/05/2010 15:46

Well said, mathanxiety.

This site is supposed to make parents' lives easier, not mirror parliamentary democracy.

As enough posters feel strongly about this issue, it clearly needs addressing even if some posters who are perhaps less injured by the barbed comments feel this turns MNHQ or the site into a manifestation of an Orwellian nightmare. I feel they are overstating the importance of a web community asking somebody to bog off. It happens every day.

daftpunk · 13/05/2010 15:55

Agree with TSH.

I like MN because you get to hear the views of so many different people, opinions you may not hear in RL...that's a good thing imo. And while I agree that MN is here to support parents, it's no secret that AIBU is the most popular topic here.....that isn't always 100% supportive

I also agree that the "hide" thread facility should be used alot more by people...make life easy.

I'm just wondering what will happen when, (or if,) I ever go back to posting on the main boards...I post on a thread that I actually quite like Frankie Boyle...what will happen..?

"There she is...at it again"..and 20 people hit the report post button...?

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 13/05/2010 15:56

Maybe you'll just have to think before you post, and ask yourself, is this going to offend people?

elliemental · 13/05/2010 15:58

Dp apologises

daftpunk · 13/05/2010 15:59

THS; What I'm trying to say is, has it all got too personal with me..?

Greensleeves · 13/05/2010 16:00

dp, you've given such apologies as you're going to make, and you've been told you're not banned, but will be if you don't shape up. Surely that's the end of it? Stop poking the fire

daftpunk · 13/05/2010 16:00

lolololololo OMG....

I really miss that

2shoes · 13/05/2010 16:03

TheShriekingHarpy I aggree to an extent I do, for example I love staffs, so I hide threads calling them killer dogs...
but it is different when it is someone promoting a political party who has memebers that think my dd would be better off dead.
that is hard to stomach.

daftpunk · 13/05/2010 16:08

GS;

It is the end of it..I've told you that.

noddyholder · 13/05/2010 16:09

3 months?

SoupDragon · 13/05/2010 16:10

I've skim read the thread and whilst I find the views of the BNP supporters abhorrent, I do not think the threads should be banned.

Why? Because the posters get given such a hard time about their beliefs from a pretty much united MN. The BNP posters try, and fail, to make a persuasive argument and simply come across as being Not Very Nice [euphemism]

I also agree that to ban people on the basis of their beliefs is wrong. Who gets to make the judgement about whether something is acceptable? Let the pack of MNers hound them instead.

daftpunk · 13/05/2010 16:12

Yep, 3 months.

What is it now..13th May..I'll stay on music until Sept...not here much during August anyway..school holidays and all that..

noddyholder · 13/05/2010 16:13

This is a music thread?

daftpunk · 13/05/2010 16:15

No it isn't

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/05/2010 16:18

Perhaps you could use those three months, DP, to reflect upon why so many people here find the things you post so upsetting?

Then when you come back, you can post in a more considered and considerate manner.

If there is a soloution that will prevent posters who are not especially squeamish or fluffy from being made uncomfortable then it suits me.

I don't believe in banning the views of parties although I reserve the right to call them wankers. I usually ignore posters I find annoying or especially stupid.

I just want the Special Needs membership from being regularly depleted because parents of children with SN find upset here instead of the support we come here for.

If it is beyond the wit of Mumsnet to find a way to protect some of their most vulnerable population then they/we should be embaressed.

If this never ending shit goes away then I will be happy - however that is achieved
