Why do I always get a notice saying "Oops! Internet Explorer could not find www.mumsnet.com

florence2511 · 02/05/2010 18:01

This happens the majority of the time I try to load mumsnet. Only occasionally can I actually get into the site. Now being one of those times, and even then when I navigate to a different page within the site after a certain period of time I get the same message.

Can anyone shed any light on this and offer any useful suggestions as to what to do?

Cheers

Florence

First clue: you are using Internet Explorer. I'm guessing version 8?

Try Google Chrome, loads every time and most importantly, not built by chimps!

StealthPolarBear · 02/05/2010 19:49

do you always put at the front? prob worth doing if you don't

choufleur · 02/05/2010 19:49

Cos IE is crap. Try google chrome as mentioned, firefox, safari anything but IE. you can just use IE to download any of those and then never bother with it again

whomovedmychocolate · 02/05/2010 19:54

Also check your connections - IE has a default I think which drops unused connections to websites after a set time, so if you are reading a long thread, you get to the end and bang you are offline and lose it. Tis tres irritating! Which is why I get one of my 5 a day by using a Mac!

OliviaMumsnet · 03/05/2010 12:17

WMMC - I never thought of the 5 a day content before - GENIUS!

But yes, you are right, I know MN and IE aren't brilliantly compatible - OP have you tried another browser?

MmeLindt · 03/05/2010 12:20

Have you checked that your DH has not put a MN lockdown onto the computer? Mine keeps threatening to do that.

Seriously, go for Firefox.

florence2511 · 03/05/2010 19:25

Thank you everyone.

I have been able to get onto Mn this afternoon.

I am abroad (in the Caribbean)if that helps and this has only been happening for the last few months. before then I could get onto MN as often as I liked.

DH hasn't put a lock on MN. Wouldn't know how to. I always ask him what the matter is and he doesn't know. I know this also because I try to get on at my friend's house and have exactly the same problem.

I will try another browser

Thanks

Try also, adding a forward slash to your URL so www.mumsnet.com/

This apparently prolongs the drop time if the server is slow to respond.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 03/05/2010 20:43

Is it your computer taking a bit of time to connect to your wireless broadband? Is it only when you first log on (and is MN the first thing you log into?)

florence2511 · 03/05/2010 22:37

It only happens when trying to get onto Mumsnet with IE. Other sites are fine.

I downloaded google chrome and it seems to work - thanks everyone.

I was only joking about the lock on the computer.

Is that even possible?

Don't tell my DH.

florence2511 · 03/05/2010 23:31

Right - google chrome isn't working either for mumsnet.
just installed firefox. will see if that works. watch this space.

firefox can't find the server at www.mumsnet.com

this is the message I get

Thank goodness IE is having a good moment so i can access the site from there (here)!!

firefox usually works for me even when (esp when) IE doesn't

(it also works with random pages which won't otherwise open from eg bbc news & the Guardian)
