I don't just want to hide a thread I am wondering if you can hide an entire topic?

Yes, under the "Customise" link at the top.

Although I can't get rid of the Ebay topic for love or money... any clues anyone?

Strike that - I've done it. Didn't realise the topic was under "In the Club".
