The MN Mail Column - what we think, and what we plan to do next... part 2

1000 replies

whataboutthisone · 18/08/2009 12:56

Firstly, I am a regular but have created a new name for this.

My thoughts about what I know so far:

  1. In a much earlier post there was a discussion about a change in T&Cs and whether they are valid or not. Several years ago I took a company to court for a breach of their T&Cs. Their argument was that they had changed T&Cs and my complaint was therefore no longer valid. However, the judge said that because I had not specifically been asked to accept the new T&Cs, I was entitled to rely on the ones I had accepted and therefore I won my case.
  1. I choose to post on MN in the knowledge that the details I give are probably just obscure enough to anyone I may know in RL who also posts, so that what I say still effectively remains private. However, that doesn't mean that the same could be said of, for instance, my mother, who reads the DM (!) There is probably just enough about my circumstances that would enable her to put 2+2 together. I would like the option to choose whether or not I let my Mum ( or anyone else in RL) in on certain areas of my life, and there is a real possibility that this hack, has taken that choice away from me.
  1. I have never ( and now will never) post asking for advice, but I will also be very careful about offering advice in the future. I, along with many others, occasionally use examples from my life to explain where I am coming from. If I continue to do that, as I said earlier, it is possible that some people would be able to work out who I am. Now, I am not so big-headed as to believe that any advice I offer is worth taking, however, there are many fantastic posters on here who do give amazing and insightful advice based on their own experiences. It would be a real shame if that was to stop because they, like me, do not want to share some of those experiences with the folk they are close to in RL. It would also be a real tragedy if others were prevented from asking for help for the same reasons.

I am very disappointed that any MNer would feel it is acceptable to violate the trust we place in each other on this forum. I do not know who she is. I do not want to know who she is. But I hope she is hanging her head in shame for breaching the trust that has been placed in her by everyone whose words she has stolen to make a few bucks!

Do you not think that saving me from a lawsuit would perhaps colour my views a tad too? Yes of course my views are coloured - I think loyalty is important, actually

morningpaper · 18/08/2009 19:43

Are you in her kitchen VS? Are you reading out the posts to her?

VeeEsss · 18/08/2009 19:44

Be nice of them to save other posters too eh?
Though not from a lawsuit from unnecessary angst when all they have to do his hit a delete button. Oh well, suppose they can pick and choose who they decide to help out.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/08/2009 19:44

No in-house joke. Just amused that enid had picked up on the fact you'd been on this thread doing A LOT fire-fighting for MNHQ. In which case, I'm that you are paid for only 2.5 hours. Your piece obviously requires a fair amount of MNing research.

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo · 18/08/2009 19:46

Fruitcrumble, I have been very clear throughout that posts in the archive are part of the larger problem here, I have no idea how you can possibly have misread the words in my post but whatever.

What are you talking about them/us? If you want to know about moldies nip off and have a look, search moldies and you will get everything you need, some people feel strongly about it - but that is true of most things so no surprises there.

MPs rate of pay? WTF is that about, like it is any of your business what she gets paid for 2.5 hours work. What a very odd comment.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/08/2009 19:47

"y FruitCrumble on Tue 18-Aug-09 19:39:43

Do I get the impression that there is a fair bit of 'them' versus 'us' thing going on?"

Only you can answer that question - it's your impression.

Loving the name.

NobodyIKnowReadsTheFarkingDM · 18/08/2009 19:47

Does it really bloody matter how many hours MP gets paid for the round up?

It certainly doesn't matter how much she gets paid. I doubt it would cover a duck island in any case.

morningpaper · 18/08/2009 19:47

So how did Enid pick that up? Because VS is reading out posts to her? So then Enid shouts out to VS to pass a message onto me that I've got no life because I've made 12 posts on the thread over the course of one day?!

ermmm

morningpaper · 18/08/2009 19:49

I get paid £15 an hour and I am self-employed

You are welcome to hire me for parties, bar mitzvahs, after dinner speaking etc.

(Unfortunately I am pissing my life away on MN so do not have much availability)

Winehouse · 18/08/2009 19:50

I agree that loyalty is important, morningpaper. I just don't think Justine et al are showing any - to anyone.

I absolutely do think that yes. Of course you'd feel obliged to fly the MN flag after 'that' whole incident. You'd not feel able to do anything but stick up for those who stuck up for you. It's what makes you somewhat unique here.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/08/2009 19:53

I would most definitely hire you for after dinner speaking MP

morningpaper · 18/08/2009 19:54

But VVQV that's the whole reason why actually the issue of IP works both ways... non? In a lot of ways, you are probably entitled to more freedom of speech on MN than you are on a private blog, for example

(I wouldn't want to objectively test this hypothesis)

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 18/08/2009 19:54

FC, i'm curious to know what other posting name/s you've had. this new name seems to be rather at odds with the 'stand by your posts' attitude that you demand of the rest of us.

"Also, if posters are happy to have recent posts in the public domain, then surely they must realise that past ones are still in the public domain and are still googleable?"

btw, you said this. as has been repeated SEVERAL times it seems that until now many people were okay with that, but it's only with the creation of this DM piece (that they asked a freelance to do without her ever having mentioned MN to them... most unusual) that the implications of that are clear.

as it happens, with regards to republication of my posts i thought i was covered by the box i ticked saying that they didn't have my permission to do so.

morningpaper · 18/08/2009 19:56

I must say I am somewhat bemused by the fact that they asked a freelancer to write the piece without realising that she was herself an MNer

that is a bit unlikely, surely?

LadyStColumb · 18/08/2009 19:56

"I imagine there are some people who have stopped using MN, moldies, facebook, MSN or any other form of cyber communication. They are just going about their lives with a low-level concern now that their past issues may be aired in a scaggy waiting room somewhere instead of on a site used by like-minded people. There is no good reason for MN to refuse to delete their posts."

This is my concern in a nutshell really.

cant believe this has moved on to MP's hourly rate for the roundup. of course she would be loyal to MN. Actually, I feel great loyalty to MN as I've been here quite a while. Would just like to know that any info I have posted will not be pieced together maliciously and identify me in RL.

Despite my previous assertion I haven't been able to piss away enough of my day on MN to follow every nuance of these threads but I don't think it's entirely true to say that MP's defence of MN is "unique".

LadyStColumb · 18/08/2009 19:57

Sorry. posted before I finished.

And as I cant know that my data wont be pieced together maliciously I'd like to be able to remove it.

Nancy66 · 18/08/2009 20:02

I do find it hard to believe that it wasn't LH that went to the Mail with the idea - rather than the other way around.

As others have said it seems a bit of coincidence.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/08/2009 20:04

I meant her position on here is unique, not her defence. Although she is pretty standalone atm with MNHQ sodding off on holiday I think she has been very valuable in terms of time to MNHQ the last 48 hours.

TBH, MP, I'm surprised you are not more peed off at not having the opportunity to do it yourself. It is your baby, after all.

I'm afraid the IP comment went over my head - what IP thing?

morningpaper · 18/08/2009 20:06

Ip as in intellectual property

Yes CLEARLY I could do such a column with far more skill, insight and wit AND yet maintaining compassion into the human condition

I'm sure that every day I am massively invaluable to MNHQ

morningpaper · 18/08/2009 20:07

Although I've not posted that much today: I don't know why you think I have. I've just been watching the thread on my phone while cooking 132 meals for a houseful of sick children and my coeliac 70-year-old mother who will catch fire if I stir her food with the wrong spoon

NobodyIKnowReadsTheFarkingDM · 18/08/2009 20:08

VVVQV, thanks, I see what you mean re unique now.

Anyone else picturing MP alone at MN towers in front of a huge control desk like Homer Simpson gradually starting to panic as more and more red lights and buzzers start going off.

LadyStColumb · 18/08/2009 20:10

MP - can I nominate you for your own quote of the week.
