The MN Mail Column - what we think, and what we plan to do next... part 2

1000 replies

whataboutthisone · 18/08/2009 12:56

Firstly, I am a regular but have created a new name for this.

My thoughts about what I know so far:

  1. In a much earlier post there was a discussion about a change in T&Cs and whether they are valid or not. Several years ago I took a company to court for a breach of their T&Cs. Their argument was that they had changed T&Cs and my complaint was therefore no longer valid. However, the judge said that because I had not specifically been asked to accept the new T&Cs, I was entitled to rely on the ones I had accepted and therefore I won my case.
  1. I choose to post on MN in the knowledge that the details I give are probably just obscure enough to anyone I may know in RL who also posts, so that what I say still effectively remains private. However, that doesn't mean that the same could be said of, for instance, my mother, who reads the DM (!) There is probably just enough about my circumstances that would enable her to put 2+2 together. I would like the option to choose whether or not I let my Mum ( or anyone else in RL) in on certain areas of my life, and there is a real possibility that this hack, has taken that choice away from me.
  1. I have never ( and now will never) post asking for advice, but I will also be very careful about offering advice in the future. I, along with many others, occasionally use examples from my life to explain where I am coming from. If I continue to do that, as I said earlier, it is possible that some people would be able to work out who I am. Now, I am not so big-headed as to believe that any advice I offer is worth taking, however, there are many fantastic posters on here who do give amazing and insightful advice based on their own experiences. It would be a real shame if that was to stop because they, like me, do not want to share some of those experiences with the folk they are close to in RL. It would also be a real tragedy if others were prevented from asking for help for the same reasons.

I am very disappointed that any MNer would feel it is acceptable to violate the trust we place in each other on this forum. I do not know who she is. I do not want to know who she is. But I hope she is hanging her head in shame for breaching the trust that has been placed in her by everyone whose words she has stolen to make a few bucks!

OP posts:
Rotteneggs · 19/08/2009 00:10

I don't feel I am turning on them.
I do feel frustrated with them.

I'm pretty neutral really.
But their actions at this point are frustrating me.

Tortington · 19/08/2009 00:11

what actions in particular

VeeEsss · 19/08/2009 00:34

don't know about anyone else's point but mine was not ;turning on them' as such, just hoping they could fix things that I (and other posters) have felt were not dealt with correctly. I don't know Justine et al so cannot judge them personally, although the only times I've seen their posts have been completely impartial so my view wouldn't help anyway

VeeEsss · 19/08/2009 00:35

Probably their nonaction custy

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 19/08/2009 00:38

to be fair, justine's on holiday. they have a good record of fair dealings, i'm sure that when they get back to full numbers and have a discussion that they'll do the right thing.

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 19/08/2009 00:39

(which is anonymise and allow deletions. )

VeeEsss · 19/08/2009 00:45

My hope is that they'll do the stock deletions, as someone else said it won't be that many posters, it shows good willing and hopefully will show MN is the MN we all thought.

One thing I will say though Aitch I have ALWAYS seen you as Mrs.TalkSense, I don't believe, right now anyway, that MNHQ have dealt with things properly so describing them as 'good eggs' is somewhat misleading, IMO, they may be totally confident of everything working out and no-one getting hurt, but I don't believe they've done enough to ensure posters over reader.

MrsBarbaraKingstanding · 19/08/2009 00:52

Gosh. I've been blissfully ignoring DM threads, AT MY PERIL it seems.

'people thought MNHQ owned their posts and therefore could not be reproduced without MNHQ's permission'

did they???

I never even vaguelly thought about it.

OMG and I'm a school governora and I'm sure Ive revealed my cats name at some point.

Why did I not thnk this through??

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 19/08/2009 00:54

i think that they have a good record so far, and that they're reacting to this DM thing. slowly, yes, because they're on holiday, but i'm confident that they'll sort it out. because they're decent people, good eggs, whatever. and they're also human, and i think given the amount of work they put in and have put in it would just be downright hurtful to come on here read that their motives are being impugned.

VeeEsss · 19/08/2009 01:01

As usual Aitch, I see your point but it is also downright hurtful to find that MNHQ value a thread more than a poster and are refusing (at the moment anyway) to delete people's posts because it would either A) be 'too laborious' (which we al know is bullshit, one button, all posts deleted) or B) make thread not 'make sense'

MrsBarbaraKingstanding · 19/08/2009 01:12

I think back in the day, there was an unwritten rulke that everyone stood by MNHQ and that 'we were all in it togther'.

I thnk that's changed/changing.

AS the site has got bigger and following moldies where mnay of the old guard who were'thick' with MNHQ left and where many of tjose left felt disatisfied with thier response to that and the Rev stuff, then I think the unbreakable link between posters and MNHQ has been broken or weakned.

Posters are now willing to challneg and critise MNHQ in a way that wouldn't have been done before where the good egg appraoich advoacted by MP and Aitch (oldies but not moldies) would have been the order of the day all round. (am I enid blyton?)

I reckon though MNHQ musting be thinking what a load of hsterical women, obviously they are not going to come and say that, but really calm down, what do yu fear is ging to happend to our pots threads if they are not deleted for another week or so??

I confidentally predict....nothing will happen. You will be OK. Honest.

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 19/08/2009 01:13

yes, well, i don't buy that either. but you know, maybe it's just one of them ones, something that they've decided was a good party line a few years ago but now should be looked at again.

if they come back off their hols and say 'we've read your concerns and think that you're all just a bunch of bored housewives* who should get a life' then yes, sure, i'll be disappointed.

  • some grizzled old poster called badgersarse thinks that the invocation of bored housewives should be henceforth known as 'cod's law'. i prefer 'morgan's law' myself.
Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 19/08/2009 01:16

ooooh. am i an oldie?

three years and i'm an oldie already. must've got bumped up when the moldies cleared orf.

nappyaddict · 19/08/2009 02:50

Did MNHQ give permission to the Indie to do their article? I know they did for the Times one.

MrsBarbaraKingstanding · 19/08/2009 02:56

Umm are you asking me? beacuse I know nothing.

Tortington · 19/08/2009 03:25

I am very nervous of suggestion No. 2 swedes ... because I search for posts by mners I like on a regular basis... but would like to be able to converse with said posters without such chagrin.

it's tomorrow

have been pondering and decided I don't care

bring it on I say. The Mail will soon get bored of us. We're like the plat du jour. And don't forget it's August. They are spending most of their time sitting there thinking WHAT THE FUCK DO WE PUT IN THE PAPER.

and a very very long time ago, when we once had this debate (ok possibly several times), I vowed to kick myself hard and remember to start threads in chat so they pass away gracefully after 90 days.
