Tis just potty training now? Have I missed something? Thanks

so MN are you going to respond? or are you going to ignore us?

norktasticninja · 05/08/2009 15:32

MN towers, I am disappointed in you. seriously disappointed.

Surely a you could have tried a sticky warning against buying/selling/swapping and an aggressive policy of deleting offending threads/posts before doing this?

A lot of cloth nappy questions simply don't fit in 'Products' at all. That topic is already overrun with all the perennially homeless pram/pushchair/car seat/sling threads.

We can have topics about chickens, music, horses, etc. etc. but not about some the most basic things involved in parenting

HelenMumsnet · 05/08/2009 15:34

Hang on, hang on - we're not ignoring you!

It's just been a bit busy at MNHQ today, so apologies for not responding earlier.

We're taking on board all you're saying here and are looking for a solution that works for everyone.

And, to reassure you all, we absolutely support the use of reusable nappies, and certainly have no wish to stop any swapping of them or chatting about them. (I'm partial to a bit of nappy chat meself!)

Please bear with us for a bit while we try to sort this out.

treedelivery · 05/08/2009 15:41

I think we should be able to deal in our second hand nappies.

It is in the spirit of reuse and mend, and we should take an eco stance here. The nappies and wraps will often contain a form of plastic, and therefore their reuse is to be applauded and encouraged.

Ok. How about this.
We should be able to discuss the buying and selling in our thread, the 'who's got a ...' and the 'what do you suggest for night time.....' needs to be thread based.

If a deal is done, maybe we could tip the wink and say - see you in the for sale board in 5 mins?

That way we get our chatter and bargain hunting, and mn gets to say it doesn't have a buying and selling thread.

LIZS · 05/08/2009 15:48

why does this apply to nappies but not the pushchair thread(s)in Products - plenty of trading happening there .

norktasticninja · 05/08/2009 15:52

I really hope theNatty is wrong about Tots Bots. TBH I suspect she's hit the nail on the head.

After much advice on MN I have 42 of their Bamboozles. Yup, a full kit in two sizes. Each and every one was bought new... Mind you I'm now using them on my second child and I know for a fact that they don't like that.

someoneorother · 05/08/2009 16:01

From my contacts I am pretty certain that it is NOT Totsbots that is complaining about personal selling on the Mumsnet Cloth Nappy thread.

claireybee · 05/08/2009 16:02

Most of my first posts on MN were on the nappies threads. And not about a specific product but more which nappy for... or how do you wash your nappies etc. I haven't used it as much lately but feel sad that other people who are new to cloth won't have access to the same resource that I did.

When I have used it I haven't seen much buying and selling, though I have seen links to for sale threads-is that a problem?

norktasticninja · 05/08/2009 16:14

someoneorother - glad to hear it

cyteen · 05/08/2009 16:22

Another person who's had invaluable advice via the nappy chat thread and in the section-as-was generally, not to mention being able to try out different things till I found what works for us (and then buying from nappy retailers accordingly and passing on what didn't work to other would-be cloth heads). Please find a way to sort this out!

TheNatty · 05/08/2009 16:24

someoneorother - oh i am pleased! wouldnt want to boycott totsbots, i rather like their bamboozles..

wastingmyejumication · 05/08/2009 16:27

It's ridiculous to not have a nappy section, simply laughable, so I hope it gets sorted soon.

Asking how to fold a terry doesn't fit anywhere else surely?

HolidaysQueen · 05/08/2009 16:37

This is so ridiculous! I would not be using reusable nappies at all if it hadn't been for venturing onto the discussion boards when I spotted the topic and starting to ask questions about whether they were even feasible or not. Without the help of people on this board, my DS wouldn't be wearing his cute Bumgenius, and businesses would not be benefitting from the very loud word-of-mouth evangelising that both me and my DH have ended up doing about them! So if you shut down the board then the buyers and sellers would have no bloody business anyway! If I was a newbie now and just saw Potty Training, I wouldn't go there looking for nappy chat, I would just assume that MN was not a place I could discuss my nappy choices. And that's very sad.

Very disappointed, MN, very disappointed.
And bloody annoyed actually that you have just decided to remove a whole topic rather than at least ask people to keep the buying/selling down (not that I felt there was ever much of that anyway). Not very democratic of you at all.

I'm off to get my soap box and create a few placards and chants right now.

swampfire · 05/08/2009 16:40

TotsBots haven't complained, Natty. I asked and they are wondering whether they should continue to advertise now there is no relevant topic for them to advertise in.

swampfire · 05/08/2009 16:43

I rather think there should be a separate nappies section - I love my fluff but potty training bored me to tears! And that's speaking as someone with two trained and one (a long way) to go.

norktasticninja · 05/08/2009 16:48

Not having a nappy section is indeed totally ridiculous as is not having a home for all the pram / buggy / carseat / sling stuff. There's no way the nappy addicts are as bad as the pram huns for buying, selling and swapping.

Soon nappies questions be spread randomly around Talk just like all the pram nonsense is.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/08/2009 17:03

Norktastic - exaclty? How ridiculous not to have it all in one place.

MNHQ - what on earth is going on? If it's not TotsBots, and if there are no small business ads, what are these mystery complaints?

HelenMumsnet · 05/08/2009 17:14

Just in case you missed my post further down, please bear with us on this.

We are working on solving this for you.

TheNatty · 05/08/2009 17:14

i wasnt accusing tots bots, simply saying they advertise here.
other then octo and tots.. who is there?

whenever a new nappy comes out its always the chat thread that informs me first, i totally missed out on itti bittis, and if it wasnt for this place...

TheNatty · 05/08/2009 17:15

lol helen, we do appreiciate you are busy..

.. but to the same token, you took the topic off pretty quick

ilovemydogandmrobama · 05/08/2009 17:49

I don't like it that there is now effectively a witch hunt as to who made the complaint which had lead to the Cloth Nappy Thread being withdrawn.

HQ really need to confirm that it wasn't TotsBots as rumors have already been started. But wouldn't make sense as they advertised on the Cloth Thread specifically for those who are obsessed interested in cloth nappies.

bet it was Pampers

TheLadyEvenstar · 05/08/2009 17:51

I cannot believe this topic has been removed. Having had 1 child 11 years ago and using disposables, I would have easily done so again with my second son 22m ago, if NOT for this topic.
If not for this topic, my 22m old would be in disposable due to me not knowing how to care for cloth nappies...but this topic taught me a lot.

MNHQ You say you are a sight by mums for mums well then you should know that MUMS are the biggest input to the financial world, we buy the clothes, toys, pushchairs, nappies etc we do this by numerous ways but by discussing things with fellows mums we actually learn more about a particular product which can sway our decisions one way or another.

By removing this topic instead of encouraging the use of cloth nappies it is actually discouraging it. When you go into society, or among your circle of friends unless you live in an extremely green area, i bet there are not many who use cloth. However coming onto MN and finding there is a vast community who do use cloth can help you to see this is a good option.

I really am shocked that these points and facts are not obvious to MNHQ who claim to be thinking of mums. This is not meant to be a business, it is meant to be a forum to help mums, and a lot of the time buying second hand is the best way to help mums.

I wonder are the "toys", Pushchair, and clothing sections going to be removed next? I mean some other business could complain.

Maybe it is time for MNHQ to remember exactly why you started this site up, was it to help and assist MUMS or to help BUSINESSES? I seriously hope it is not the latter.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 05/08/2009 17:54

Yep -- have sent a heads up to the Pram Huns.

JennyPenny22 · 05/08/2009 19:21

It actually wouldn't suprise me if it was a disposable nappy company. I think disposables are the only thing that ever get negative feedback over there - although brands aren't usually mentioned.

TBH I think the ideal situation would be to ADD a nappy section, seperate from potty training but say NO SELLING? Maybe then, if anybody wants to buy or sell through conversations/recomendations you can just say "I have an add on the for sale board" type thing?

I also think there should be a section for prams/buggys and babywearing.

I think what has annoyed people is that there wasn't even an attempt to just ask us to stop trading. Fair enough if there were several warnings etc.

AND The fact that it has been blamed on complaints from advertisers when it doesn't really look like that is true.

JennyPenny22 · 05/08/2009 19:22

ilovemydog - Nice to see you again
