why do you have to pay to PM other users of mn?

as a relative newbie to mn and having used other parenting forums i am wondering why you have to pay to PM?

ive ended up stealing peoples threads to answer things which i hate doing...

so why no free PM system?

I assume its a major source of income to the site pickyvic. I imagine a site the size of mumsnet needs quite a bit of income to keep it going.

they're ultra-choosy about ads they take, so they need the money from somewhere else.

We do charge a nominal amount for our PMs - or CATs in Mumsnet-speak - simply as a way to help us meet our running costs.

But at only £5 for as many CATs as you like in a whole year, we reckon that's not too bad really.
