Can we please have an editing thingy ?

Hello,

I have been spending time at another forum. It's fine though, it's not parenting one.

Anyway, to the point.

This other forum has a little but you can go back into your post to edit it. It would be great for illiterate people like me who make many errors from time to time.

Can we have this ? Please.

It also has starts to rate threads but I don't want that here, it may cause a problem or 23.

Thanks in advance.

yes even if only for say 10 mins after the post

AND a link from the bottom of the page back to active convos

AND a link at the end of the thread title on active convos that takes you to the last post on that thread.

clemette · 16/06/2009 10:17

Yes please. I am embarrassed by my typos...

FelineFine · 16/06/2009 10:27

Yes, just for 5/10 mins after post would be fine.

Yes please.
And as PhaseAte says a link from the bottom of the page back to actives or even a 'back to the top of page button' would be helpful

ta.

Morning all!

We have considered the editing thing before - and decided against because we thought it might cause confusion.

Eg 'AIBU to hate babies'?
'Yes you are BU'
Then OP changed to 'AIBU to love babies'

See what we mean?

But if everyone feels very strongly about this, we're happy, of course, to have look at it again.

By the way, there is a Preview Message button next to the Post Message button that lets you look at and correct your message before you post.

Bucharest · 16/06/2009 11:31

and one of the most recent trolls wouldn't have been caught out had she had an edit button to cover her arse....

I'm quite happy without one.

HelenMumsnet · 16/06/2009 11:31

PhaseAte: you can customise your settings so that you always see the last post on a thread first.

Go to the Customise link (next to Topics link) and change the Reading Direction to Most Recent First.

PhaseAte · 16/06/2009 15:48

i knwo but i dont WANt that

harleyd · 16/06/2009 16:01

an edit facility is stupid
just bother your arse to preview your posts first

lou33 · 16/06/2009 16:11

i think there should be one

EyeballshasManBoobs · 16/06/2009 16:16

I don't think there should be an edit feature. It's the only forum I know that doesn't have one and it makes it a bit warts and all, which I prefer. Be pretty dull to trawl through reams and reams of perfect posts. What would all the pedants do? Think of all the Freudian slips we'd miss.

clemette · 16/06/2009 16:44

lol, people would still mis-spell "definately" and "seperate". And harleyd could add some punctuation and capitals

harleyd · 16/06/2009 16:46

nah, too much like hard work mate

belgo · 16/06/2009 16:57

I'd have no excuse then for spelling mistakes.

I don't think we should have an editing option, in particular because of the trolls recently, and because it could cause threads to become even more confusing.

lou33 · 16/06/2009 17:00

most editing facilities usually mention that a post has been edited and at what time, so everyone would be aware that it had been changed

cocolepew · 16/06/2009 17:04

We don't need an edit facility, just for other posters to stop pointing out spelling mistakes or misuse of apostrophes or commas. It doesn't happen that often but it makes me cringe when it does.

Maybe because I'm flummoxed by both ' and ,

uberalice · 16/06/2009 17:07

Preview Message doesn't work. Well, OK, technically it works, but in practice it's impossible to see your mistakes until you've posted it properly.

TigersChick · 16/06/2009 17:07

Yes, lou, but they don't show what the change was ... So it can make very confusing reading when, for example, someone missed a 'not' out of a post, they've been shouted at, then they've edited, but by then the thread has moved on and lots of people didn't notice the edit .... so they're still being shouted at by some people while other people have noticed the edit and can't understand what the problem is as, for all they know, the edit may have been to add a capital letter or something equally inconsequential ...

Better without IMVHO.

TigersChick · 16/06/2009 17:08

That was intentionally garbled, you understand ... proves my point ...

uberalice · 16/06/2009 17:08

Now I think about it, I wouldn't be comfortable with an editing facility unless you could view the original post as well.

TheFool · 16/06/2009 17:34

nope. no editing.

lou33 · 16/06/2009 18:44

i am fluent in garbled

Bumperlicioso · 16/06/2009 18:58

Nah, pointless IMO, like coco says things would just be much better people didn't embarrass others by insisting on pointing out errors which are mostly typos.

cocolepew · 16/06/2009 19:44

Bumper I do believe you left out the word 'if' in your post.

[runs away very fast]

HecatesTwopenceworth · 16/06/2009 19:45

No.

Don't ask again.
