CP

cerebral palsy or chemical pregnancy, depending on the context

as copied from mn

why oh why do people use if for chicken pox.

Because it's the natural abbreviation and not everybody thinks through what else it could refer to if they're posting about chicken pox.

Hulababy · 08/05/2009 22:42

Is it being used within a thread where chicken pox has already been mentioned?

I am probably guilty of doing the above, but with no intention of causing offence.

MerlinsBeard · 08/05/2009 22:42

CP is not a mutually exclusive abbreviation

psychomum5 · 08/05/2009 22:44

I use it on chicken pox threads, simply as that is what I am talking about (as is everyone else).

in general usage tho I wouldn;t as it could be an abbreviation for other things.

tis like many things tho.........abbrevaitions can be cross-matched al the time, so you use them (IMO) only when it is obvious what you mean.

tinylittlekittens · 08/05/2009 22:46

First hit on Google for CP

tiggerlovestobounce · 08/05/2009 22:48

If its a thread about chicken pox, then I see no problem with CP as an abbreviation.

IotasCat · 08/05/2009 22:50

CP = centerparcs on the holiday threads

2shoes · 08/05/2009 23:17

2shoes you seem to not like much at all about mumsnet lately. Maybe you should take break?

Greensneeze · 12/05/2009 17:06

In answer to the OP

because "chicken" starts with C and "pox" starts with P

You can't own an abbreviation!

Galava · 12/05/2009 17:08

I dont understand why you have a problem with it.

Why should anybody have to write out chicken pox every time when CP is good enough ?

SoupDragon · 12/05/2009 17:09

I agree with Greeny.

I can understand you may be upset to open a thread titled something like 'Anyone else's child have CP?' and find that they meant chicken pox but if the thread is about chicken pox or Center Parcs even, then I think it's reasonable to abbreviate

Greensneeze · 12/05/2009 17:17

why would you be upset to open a thread about CP and find they had chicken pox? Why is that upsetting?

sounds like a fuss about nothing to me

Lulumama · 12/05/2009 17:17

i agree with greensleeves

it is not about dismissing the seriousness of cerbral palsy , it is not a dig at children with cerbral palsy, or their parents.

it is simply an abbreviation

DiamondHead · 12/05/2009 17:17

My name is Charlotte Perkins.

Is it offensive for me to use my initials. Could you suggest an alternative.

Lulumama · 12/05/2009 17:20

i am all for sensitivity and tact, but disallowing the use of an abbreviation because it is an abbreviation for something more serious is a bit OTT

can you explain more why it upsets you 2shoes? not being arsey, am just interested in understanding more

2shoes · 12/05/2009 17:21

i had forgotton all about this thread, the clue I think is when I posted it
I once opened a thread about CP, it was a about a child with CP not being allowed to go to a party, there was no mention of what CP,
so you can imagine how angry I was getting on behalf of the poor child, untill I realised it was chicken pox not cerable palsey

Lulumama have you goit a child with CP? I have I live with it.
chicken pox is a childhood ilness, I am sure people could write the whole words out for the short time they have to use them

Can I just say 2shoes asked 'please'. She didn't say 'fuckers using this abbreviation piss me off and should be banned'.
I don't have a child with CP but I have done a double take at threads in active convos saying 'help, my DD has CP' and clicked on to advise who can help only to find someone bleating about chicken pox.

As the mum of a child with huge difficulties I have an emotional reflex to titles like that - thats all - they kind of make me falter IYSWIM in the way certain other thread titles do. But its not a big deal to me and i wouldn't have asked but not especially sure that the sarky replies were especially called for....

wannaBe · 12/05/2009 17:28

thing is, is the term "cp" used other than when you're writing about it? i.e. you wouldn't say to someone (face to face) "I have a child with CP" you would say "I have a child with cerebral palsy" similarly you would say "My child has chicken pox/we're going to centre parks".

So it's a written abreviation only and isn't used to cause offence in the same way as other terms which refer to children with cerebral palsy are, iyswim.
