Cheeky buggers in the MSM (MSM = mainstream media) - Mumsnet / PW reference half way down.

ruty · 02/04/2009 23:06

'professed to be horrified' wtf?

noopska · 02/04/2009 23:08

if i could get my hands on your MSM chum....

ruty · 02/04/2009 23:08

whole quote:
' At the Douglas Alexander briefing, the first question was asked by someone from Mumsnet. It was a good question too, about maternal mortality in the developing world. But Mumsnet taking part in government briefings ? at least one of my MSM colleagues professed to be horrified.'

No development of the point or anything. Or indeed any point at all....Patronising feckers.

noopska · 02/04/2009 23:13

the journos are just scared of the bloggers cos they are taking over!

Aefondkiss · 02/04/2009 23:46

He did at least say it was a good question, but still what a horribly patronising comment grrrr.

policywonk · 03/04/2009 00:06

FECK
ARSE
GIRLS

I went to Obama's press conference you know. He actually got a round of applause and very nearly a standing ovation until the hardened hacks remembered themselves.

I propose a TOAST

to mumsnet

I love some of you feel very warmly towards others don't know who most of you are have neutral feelings about a lot of you and want to push some of you off a cliff love you, I do.

Have had the most utterly fantastic time for the past two days and I would never have done it without MN.

Ouch! aaaaand sleep!

bleh · 03/04/2009 07:26

Man, that grauniad comment. They do realise how many mumsnetters there are? Don't they. Boycott the Grauniad! That'll teach em.

EffiePerine · 03/04/2009 08:05

Some of us are boycotting the Graun already, on the grounds of it being patronising wank

just another reason...

PW you did brilliantly

ArcticLemming · 03/04/2009 08:33

Well the MSM are so universally well informed and unbiased how could we ever think Mumsnet could compete?
It was a very well framed and pertinent question (as even he had to admit) - they just felt threatened!
WEll done PW!

PostAndGo · 03/04/2009 08:48

Ha! That I think is the Guardian's problem in a nutshell- they haven't moved with the times (with a small or a big 't') and realised that internet is MSM now.

Gosh, I missed her! had I know PW was around last night I could have asked her more questions! particularly if there is any PW's blog out of what gets published on Mumsnet, and how on Earth can I be developing a crush for Robert Peston just out of reading his blog...

Lemontart · 03/04/2009 09:08

exactly, postandgo.
What a patronising, judgemental man. I used to find his column fairly succinct and interesting Grrrr. Looks like the Guardian is in danger of being respected for it?s past endeavours and resting on it?s laurels.. totally out of touch article.

pw - good on you! Hope you are not too exhausted by it all and so glad to see you really enjoyed the last two days. I know nothing about you other than your posts and your now famous (and disgustingly pretty) mugshot BUT I am genuinely proud and excited for you!

theyoungvisiter · 03/04/2009 09:14

"But Mumsnet taking part in government briefings ? at least one of my MSM colleagues professed to be horrified"

I suppose us little women aren't supposed to bother our pretty heads with complicated stuff like summits and should confine ourselves to playing with the babies and thinking of happy, fluffy things.

Oh no, hang on, sorry, I suddenly slipped back into the 1950s for a moment there... or rather Andrew Sparrow seems to have

They do realise that (shock) some members of Mumsnet are journalists don't they?

morningpaper · 03/04/2009 09:17

I don't GET the Guardian quote. Unless it really IS saying: the idea that women who have had children should be involved in politics is horrifying.

Is that REALLY what it is saying? REALLY?

PW you did SUCH an amazing job, well done! You were a complete star!

bleh · 03/04/2009 09:19

Maybe they were just going along with the whole 1950s theme, you know, all the WAGs going shopping at Bond Street to do their bit to help out the economy while the men do all the real work. (erm, fixing the huge mess that male egos played a large part in creating).

theyoungvisiter · 03/04/2009 09:22

I think perhaps what he INTENDED to say was that

  1. the business of grilling politicians ought to be left to trained political rottweilers who can ask properly difficult and searching questions and

  2. that the government are wriggling out of public scrutiny by giving more and more of their communication time to avenues not able to conduct this serious, weighty grilling. Much like Blair refusing to go on Today during his prime-ministership, because he knew he would be grilled about the Iraq war, but agreeing to go on Richard and Judy and Blue Peter.

However if that IS what he was trying to say, it's fairly patronising and he expressed it in a very dubious manner. I wonder if he would have made the same remark if the first question had been from, say, a student or youth newspaper, or an ethnic minority website forum?

morningpaper · 03/04/2009 09:26

Ah yes that would be more thoughtful, instead of spluttering "A girl just talked!"

theyoungvisiter · 03/04/2009 09:29

Go on, who's registered on teh Guardian talkboards? Someone make a rude comment!

bleh · 03/04/2009 09:30

I've just posted a very snotty comment on his blog. Feel somewhat vindicated. Will now go back to ignoring the Grauniad

Wormsmeat · 03/04/2009 09:32

lol mp
The male student who had graduated 2nd in his year at PPE said to me in quite innocent horror 'I was beaten by a girl.'
