Is there a "hide/block poster" option?

Maybe I'm being a bit dim, but I can't see it. pl. could you point me in the direction if it exists?

If not, wouldn't this be a good idea? Lots of other forums have this function - it's no biggie, it is not as if the other poster knows that you have hidden them.

Have MNHQ looked into this and already dismissed it?

I have sobbed manys a time over things people have said on MN.

Still hate the blocking option

Rather than blocking posters it's probably a good idea to work out which controversial topics hit your buttons and avoid them like the plague.

And try to remember that when people start on you it's not you (hopefully) but your point of view.

So if you hold that point of view very dear and it touches a nerve just don't touch it.

Unfortunately it takes experience and tears to find out which topics these are. And even then a seemingly innocuous thread can take you by surprise

It is interesting because mumsnet does see itself as a "community" and a self-policing one at that.

Most forums of a comparable or bigger size are much more heavily moderated. Much, much more. Some would argue that it is this 'light touch' that gives the site a uniqueness, and that is probably true, but it also has consequences. External facing, such as the Gina Ford incident, and internal ones, such as the constant troll paranoia and the moldies debacle.

The hide poster option,(and it is pretty standard on social networking sites) works because usually no one, except you, knows about it. It doesn't mean that the thread is interrupted, one just chooses not to see those posts/poster. It is an accepted function of regulation. I can see that, as such, it goes against the ethos of the site.

Mumsnet is fascinating because it is such a volatile, risk averse place, for example, a really soft site redesign sparks outrage. Thinking about it, I can't imagine how they would introduce it here anyway - it would be akin to trying to herd cats.

ah don't worry about it....it's sunday night...chill out!

FairLadyRantALot · 15/02/2009 21:14

so...wouldn't it break up the flow of a thread though, coolbeans...surely some threads will loose their sense by posts missing...

I have been member of a few sites....different formats...but can't recall any ignore options on those...bar maybe for direct messaging, which is entirely different thing altogether....

Hate the idea and would hate MN to have such an option.

Surely as adults you just learn to ignore posters you don't necessarily agree on. Though have to say that s far there is no one on MN after 6 years her, that I would feel the desire to block entirely - no one so far has been that bad I would never want to read something from them ever!

SoupDragon · 16/02/2009 08:31

Of course it would interrupt the flow of a thread! If you are ignoring all posts by a couple of posters and they make important points on a thread, you are going to look a twat when you post something which ignores those important points. People are going to say "Oy! Twat! Don't you read the posts!" and you're going to get all offended and hide a few more posters....

FairLadyRantALot · 16/02/2009 23:05

that is what i WAS THINKING...IT WOULDN'T MAKE SENSE... oops, didn't mean to shout

FriarKewcumber · 16/02/2009 23:10

I would sooo like this facility in work... any chance it would be made to work in RL.

On MN (like many) don't have the attention span to worry about individual posters!
