Because he's been working hard to get something done and I appreciate the effort.
OK, you might say that's his job, but do your family never thank you for something you've done that you might have been expected to do anyway but which they really appreciate? Because mine do, and so do the teachers at the school I work at, and it makes me feel good, so why not pass it on?
