Our comments, in MN books, who owns our collective wisdom?

Who owns our comments?

We can request them to be removed from this forum, but not in print. In posting we give consent for them to be on MN on the web, but does that extend to publication in a book.

I am not looking for a fight, it is a serious question, who owns the copyright to our words, if they are in publication? Was there consent to have our collective words printed in a book?

I heard searched my hard drive and don't think you are quoted Boffinmum (although am not really QUITE sure about this XP filesearch, it doesn't seem to work very well)

Does that reassure you at all?

BoffinMum · 29/01/2009 15:48

xposts

Leeza, because I have got 4 kids, plus a PhD in this, that's why, plus have spent 20 years working in the education sector at a range of levels. Not many have. But you step in if you think you can do better, by all means.

BoffinMum · 29/01/2009 15:49

It's not about whether I am quoted or not. It's about getting a careful balance between commerce and community and valuing things that are precious.

morningpaper · 29/01/2009 15:51

off you flounce

morningpaper · 29/01/2009 15:51

Oh no, have just realised that as well as never appearing on any "who is your favourite MNer" lists, or in the roundup, or winning anything, I will probably now be adding not appearing in the MN guides to the "how do you know you're a reject" list

cocolepew · 29/01/2009 15:53

I don't have a PhD but I could read that MN own out souls words.

Leeza2 · 29/01/2009 15:54

i think you will find boffin mum, that lots of mumsnetters have PhDs. including me. and lots of kids. what i dont have is an over inflated sense of my own importance

MP - please don't call me leeeeeeza reminds me of lavenderrrrrrrr [shudder]

NB must save Leeeeeeeza for baby name thread.when a poster wants something beautiful and unique

will revert to regular Mn name now

LadyMuck · 29/01/2009 15:55

You seem to think that you are one of a throng who is exiting over this Boffinmum? Who else is so outraged over the fact that they might be quoted in a book that they will be flouncing?

I could see that you might be annoyed if MNHQ had asked you to write as a professional authority on some issue or other, but aren't you just another anonymous parent on the net? I'm assuming that Justine might be more careful at quoting Harriet Harmen or Dave or someone.

Swedes · 29/01/2009 15:56

Big {grin] at "because I have got 4 kids, plus a PhD in this". I didn't know you could get formal qualifications in talking shite on tut internet.

Christine7 · 29/01/2009 15:58

and what's wrong with Christine? [flounces]

hippipotamiHasLostTwoPounds · 29/01/2009 15:59

Love the forword...
But which book is the first one? Which one is the funniest one?
Which one do I buy (limited funds, have to shop smart
And am I in it?? Probably not, I never say anything funny, or clever, or insightful ....

(although I made the roundup once, that was my 15mins of fame )

wotzy · 29/01/2009 16:01

I don't know how you see that a poster has an over inflated sense of my own importance just by the fact that they have a different view on the matter.

I think Justine has already said that the the websites copyright issues will be introduced SOON into the membership joining, so we are clear as to what we would wish to contribute or not. Some of us that are here now did not have an opt in or opt out. Luckily, I talk complete rubbish so I know my comments will not be used and thank the Lord for that.

The writing style is like this:

There is much debate about whether the Mumsnet Toddler Guide is taking the piss out of its members by abusing their professional expertise, and one mum writes: "I have got 4 kids, plus a PhD in this, that's why, plus have spent 20 years working in the education sector at a range of levels. But you step in if you think you can do better, by all means." However, others disagree, and prefer a more open-source approach:

"I honestly don't care about the profit aspect. I can't be arsed to put a forum or book and the promotion together so if someone can and make some dosh out of it, go for it. It will be full of excellent advice I'm sure and that should reach a wider audience!" LeninGrad

There does that help at all

Ingles2 · 29/01/2009 16:14

funnily enough MP, I imagined that was your first name. That or Sophie. Spooky huh?

PenelopePitstops · 29/01/2009 16:14

forgive my stupidity

what does IP stand for?

OhBling · 29/01/2009 16:15

ROFL.

This is brilliant. Swedes - I did wonder when I joined if my simply post graduate diploma and moderately successful career was sufficiently high brow enough for me to post on "how to make the best pancakes ever" on MN.

But after careful consideration, I decided it would probably be okay. As long as I wasn't quoted in a book.

I think it was this....

"Have discussed this with DH (lawyer) and decided this stinks and I am not being involved with MN any more by giving professional services and IP for free. ** off MN. You've milked us dry and killed the goose that laid the fucking golden egg. We professionals are now off flouncing elsewhere."

and this

"I am certainly up for a fight as well, if I see anything cited in their books I have written without the proper acknowledgements to me and the publisher."

If the poster hung around MN for a little longer she woudl have learned that many Mners have Phds. Many write for a living. Many are professionals and give advice here that they can charge for elsewhere. many share their vast expertise in areas such as SN but don't necessarily have any paper qualifications. Some share their experience of divorce or bereavement or stillbirth. Does that mean their advice is less valuable?

you have missed the point about the value of collective experience
