Deletion of threads: notifying the OP

WalkinginWaynettaWonderland · 01/01/2009 11:09

Firstly, Happy New Year MNHQ!

Now, on to the serious stuff.....
When you make the decision to pull a thread, is it generally your policy not to inform the OP that the thread is being deleted?

I started a legitimate thread the other day, asking the whereabouts of a poster, which is a pretty standard sort of enquiry. I was quite specific about the wording of the OP as a I suspected that the person in question may have left because of YOUKNOWWHAT and I didn't want to go into a discussion about that, just wanted to know if the rumours were true.

Anyhoo, I suspect the thread descended into a discussion about YKW after I had left it, and it was therefore deleted, which I can understand. But it would have been nice if I, as the OP, was notified that this was going to be happening / had happened.
(I was going to add something about threads mysteriously vanishing potentially having a censorship impact, but thought that may be a bit OTT)

So, is this BAU or is it just because you are fed up with the whole prawngate discussion?

OP posts:
evaangel · 01/01/2009 11:13

the YKW discussion has been dominated on MN too much imo

Flamespar · 01/01/2009 12:12

It was made v clear that YKW threads would be deleted. If you thought they left because of it, then it makes sense it would be deleted tbh

TotalChaos · 01/01/2009 12:14

As I recall that particular thread got deleted for turning into a bit of a slanging match rather than specifically because it touched on YKW matters.

SparklyBaubleFeast · 01/01/2009 12:17

actually i Dont Know What!

WalkinginWaynettaWonderland · 01/01/2009 12:17

So I am the only one who thinks the OP should be informed of the deletion?

On another forum that I'm on, when a thread is deleted, a post is added to a Deleted/Moved posts thread. Only the moderators can post to this thread, and they will state the reason why the post has been deleted.

This is probably easier for admin staff than (potentially) entering into long correspondance with the OP about the thread.

On mumsnet, I guess such a thread would appear in Site Stuff.

Happy 2009 everyone!

WalkinginWaynettaWonderland · 03/01/2009 11:33

a not so subtle bump...I know you're there MNHQ

Do the people who delete the threads have to monitor the site 24/7 in times of MN crisis such as these? That must suck! Imagine... refresh,scroll.......refresh,scroll.......
refresh,scroll.......And sleep. Maybe your thread got deleted to err on the side of caution waynetta?

StealthPo09IsHere · 03/01/2009 11:52

Presumably they can set up a keyword search
Which is why there was a rumour that my thread asking about mould in my shower had gone came about

(Mould still there btw )

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 03/01/2009 12:02

PMSL at Stealth's question about mould in her shower being deleted!!!!! That would be funny.

And in a time when there is not much to laugh about. Cue violins.

There is def not much to laugh about chez Buda as DH has manflu and I have to be chief cook and bottle washer and nurse and deal with the mountain of washing we seem to have accumulated while away for Xmas. It is times like these I realise how much DH usually does! Not that I would admit it to him in a lifetime!

WalkinginWaynettaWonderland · 03/01/2009 12:07

Sounds crap Buda.

PMSL at Stealth's shower!!!

It's not too bad really Waynetta. Am just enjoying a moan! DH is normally great and does lots of cooking and dishwasher emptying etc but is just lying on the sofa calling for drugs and drinks at the mo. He and DS both slept on their respective sofas for 3 hours yesterday.

I have a cold and am hoping to escape flu. Will prob get next week though just as school goes back and I want to get back to normality.

ClausImWorthIt · 03/01/2009 12:37

Can I just hijack this thread and say how nice it was to meet you Buda, and I now have a clear picture of what you look like when you post!

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 03/01/2009 13:09

Thank you Claus!!!

It was lovely to meet you too!

JustinExcelsisMumsnet · 06/01/2009 17:39

We don't as a rule inform the OP WalkinginWaynettaWonderland - but if you are anxious you can always write in and ask what happened to it and we'll always tell you why it was deleted.

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/01/2009 17:41

OMG Justine - are you reading through all the threads that happened when you were on holiday?! I don't think I'd ever be able to face going away if I had that waiting for me on my return - it's bad enough dealing with all the e-mail!

JustineMumsnet · 06/01/2009 17:46

I know I thought the team might have perhaps answered something but they were all out on the lash too busy.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 07/01/2009 11:16

Thanks Justine - and welcome back! ('tis Waynetta in ew clothing)
