Help me Tech! Clicked on a link from a thread and have buggered my PC!

Something claiming to be MS AntiSpyware 2009 has downloaded onto my PC after I clicked on a link from Miaou's thread about OJ's blanket and it keeps giving me warning messages that my PC is horribly infected and I must pay to get the full version of the programme to clean up the PC. We already have McAfee, btw. Any advice?

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 19/12/2008 13:06

With the same link btw.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 19/12/2008 13:06

*uninstall

ComeOVeneer · 19/12/2008 13:08

Happened to me yesterday too. I have managed to delete it and it seems to be fine now. I did have a major panic as it was going on about attacks from viruses etc.

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 19/12/2008 13:10

Ooooh, sounds like a Trojan. Check your google, search for something and if it comes up with other search engines then you are infected.

The only thing that sorted out my pc was malwarebytes that I downloaded for free. My own anti-virus checker told me that everything was ok when it obviously wasn't!

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 19/12/2008 13:11

Yeah it did that to my google yesterday. We had to clean everything and re install.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 19/12/2008 13:11

Oh shit i've just rememebered dd finished school at 1.30 pm today i've got to go willc heck back on this later!

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 19/12/2008 13:13

I did all of that but the Google wasn't fixed. I will try and find my thread for you and link to it.

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 19/12/2008 13:14

Here

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 19/12/2008 13:16

It's an ad basically (as far as I can see) so if you click 'ignore and proceed' or whatever it just goes to the site, if you click 'help' it gives you stacks of ads.

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 19/12/2008 13:21

But the difference is that they will try to download something on your pc. And like you said, pop-ups you can usually cancel, this one doesn't go away.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 19/12/2008 13:30

Oh what a nobber, it's the hostsite at fault though.

It's sad it's happened on what should be a mumsnet at its best thread.

YeahBut · 19/12/2008 18:41

Downloaded the malwarebytes software which seems to have sorted it out. Thanks for your help.
