it has taken me 3 days to work out whats going on - i find active conversations through 'without chat' next to topics though now i'm thinking is this the the same as active conversations?

No no - it's fine - this is good!

See it says 'Active Conversations' on the left, and then you can choose which class of Active Conversations you want to look at.
