Night time reports

BIossomtoes · 14/10/2026 08:38

The site appears to be like the Wild West at night. I reported the most vicious personal attack I’ve ever seen here last night and it’s still there this morning. Is there any point in reporting anything at night any more?

Did you post in the night watch topic? They usually hide anything that needs to be hidden pretty quickly for the daytime mods to look at in the morning.

BIossomtoes · 14/10/2026 09:06

Thanks for that. I didn’t even know there was a night watch topic.

That poster has been one of the most negative posters here, dripping negativity and anger (frequently about benefits) all over multiple threads. She/he needs help. I have no idea what the root of the anger is, they absolutely refuse to see anyone else’s viewpoint at all.

Thanks for that. I didn’t even know there was a night watch topic.

This is why there needs to be a sticky that appears at certain hours, or a publicity thing, so many people say they’ve never heard of them.

BIossomtoes · 14/10/2026 09:13

A sticky would be good. I’m off to find it now and make it a favourite. Thank you.

I reported a thread last night at around 9.30 pm - i.e. before The Night Watch are 'on duty'. Still there this morning.

It's a real issue that people don't know that there is a Night Watch board, or where to find it.

It's even more of an issue when MNHQ aren't responding to reports.

Usernamesalltakenblues · 14/10/2026 11:26

I agree that a lof of people don't know about the Nightwatch board - I'd been on MN for quite a while before I discovered it.
Even now I think it's very unclear at which point someone should use the Nightwatch rather than using the report button. I also feel if like OP someone is reporting a personal attack post on themselves they dont necessarily want to do it through the public means of the Nightwatch.
I think the reporting system as a whole should be made clearer and guidance on the way to report should be made more easily accessible to site users.

BugJuice · 14/10/2026 11:27

Night moderation (well, lack of) on here is an absolute shambles.

BIWI · 14/10/2026 11:29

@Usernamesalltakenblues

Yes I agree. Because I was reporting a poster, I didn't want to 'name names' publicly, as that wouldn't have been fair on the poster in question.

BIossomtoes · 14/10/2026 11:30

Mine wasn’t about me @Usernamesalltakenblues. It was an attack on some poor woman with disabled kids. Absolutely disgusting.

PoppieCock · 14/10/2026 11:33

That’s a point.

At what time of an evening are we supposed to report to NW instead of HQ?

Oh that is awful. Well done you for trying to get the post taken down.

Posters can always change names to post on night watch which may make them feel more comfortable.

It was the worst I’ve seen here in over ten years - and the bar is high. It’s gone now.

OP posts:
Usernamesalltakenblues · 14/10/2026 11:36

That's true @TalkingToTheDogs.
I hadn't thought of that.

Yes, that's true - but I still don't think it's fair to name names.

If a poster is saying something really bad like the OP seems to be describing, personally I wouldn’t worry about naming names. If they don’t want to be named and shamed, they should behave more appropriately, It’s all anonymous anyway as not like you’re posting their real name, it’s just a username. And if they’ve done nothing wrong their post will remain.

I agree that when it comes to ugly posts like the one being described (I didn’t see it, thankfully), naming the username directly is absolutely fine.

BIWI · 14/10/2026 11:53

In some instances, where a poster is being very evidently racist (or any other -ist) or definitely making a clear personal attack, perhaps. But I still feel uneasy using a poster's name, even if we are anonymous here.

But this is the issue with The Night Watch being an open topic, as opposed to a separate channel for sending a report.

As I understand it, after 11pm. Although I'm sure MNHQ will correct me if I'm wrong!

randomchap · 14/10/2026 14:34

Why isn't there anyone looking at the reports overnight? Mumsnet is a very popular website with hundreds of thousands of users having limited moderation overnight makes no sense

BeckyAMumsnet · 14/10/2026 16:13

Hi all. Thanks for raising this. We’re currently dealing with a high volume of reports, which means some reports are taking longer than we’d like to be reviewed.

Please do continue to use the report button as it's the right route and reports are reviewed as soon as we humanly can. We also appreciate the feedback that the Night watch route and the distinction between it and reporting to HQ aren’t clear enough. This has been raised before and we'll discuss what we can do.

If you see something that feels especially urgent overnight, please use the Night Watch board as well as reporting, ideally with a direct link to the post. We do understand that this isn’t always a comfortable option where a report concerns a personal attack towards you, and we'll discuss this, too.

SilenceInside · 14/10/2026 16:20

I would have thought it would be an acceptable cost to pay for offshore overnight moderators, even if much more minimal in number than in the daytime. Especially after the appalling overnight incident where truly vile images were posted.

MN seem very very reluctant to go down the route of overnight paid staff though.

Basically, they don’t want to pay for moderators and eat in to their £££ profits.

JaneJeffer · 16/10/2026 09:01

There’s a problem here at night with people who are obviously under the influence of something and get very nasty because there’s nobody around to stop them.
