Please sort out moderation at night

Some disgusting posta appearing over & over. It should be easy to spot and delete these.

Surely even a fairly basic filter could stop them.

Anyone know any journalists?

The fact they're gloating about getting past mumsnet filters/moderation too...surely there's an easy solution to this

If they didn't fix after the last truly horrific things going at night, they won't for this.

From that article, ”Ms Roberts defended the use of volunteer moderators overnight, saying they were based overseas in different time zones "so they can easily monitor the site".
"I don't believe this horrible incident would have been prevented had it happened in office hours with our usual moderation team in London," she said.
"The key is to stop this type of horrific thing being posted on our site in the first place and we're putting all our efforts into preventing that from happening again."”

No mention of paying them.

Disgusting posts tonight. I've reported the ones that I've come across as I'm sure has everyone else on this thread (and the other one about the same problem).

But a site this big shouldn't be relying on genuine users stumbling across repeated offensive posts by the same user and then reporting them.

Yeah it's been a while since we saw the Night Watch team on here.

Didn't see any upsetting posts last night though - always around late for UK time as live across the pond.

Agree with what everyone said - you can't rely on people reporting posts

It needs proper moderation

As I recall the Nightwatch volunteers don’t have access to the report control panel to see what people are reporting. Not sure if MNHQ ever bothered to remedy that for them.

Tonight's disgusting trolls are absolutely sickening. I've reported every post I've come across, but quite honestly I don't have the stomach to click on any more threads.

I'm going to spend my evening avoiding MN and the adverts thensponsors pay for, and hope others will do the same.

I suspect the lack of GMT overnight moderation is based on a simple cost benefit analysis - who in Britain is up and looking at adverts at 2am after all.

So, they leave the spammer but have removed the other thread complaining about him/her.

I've never understood why they go with just allowing everything unless someone specifically reports it, and even then it's hit and miss as to whether they actually remove it. I know tattle has its own problems, but at least with them every single post is moderated and amended/removed if necessary

I reported a lot last night, too and gave up trying to read any threads, as they seemed to be everywhere.

Tattle membership and site traffic is tiny compared to Mumsnet. Mumsnet couldn't possibly operate the same way. I do agree they need full time paid staff overnight though. I cannot understand who would volunteer to do it, or why.

Tattle is much smaller than MN. So you can't compare the two.

How come the nightwatch can't close registration over night when the site is being spammed?

I reported 2 of the obscene posts last night but didn't hear back. It was a poster who had already been deleted at least once on the same thread. Could they not have been blocked after the first offence?

Surely this is the way. They have been on for multiple nights straight.

• Close registration at night
• Or only allow one post to be started ie. If someone is in trouble with unlimited commenting on that thread.
• Put restriction on number of comments elsewhere for a certain period ( say 24 hours). You earn nightly comment rights by being a normal poster for x number of days.

And I don’t think we can say but international users… if this is an international site then proper paid moderation should be 24/7.

I know some other forums and even Facebook pages that lock/close to posts at night until the morning when a mod comes online! Why can't we do that when we are at risk of being spammed?
People can still view the site and queue posts.

Nightwatch are all volunteers, and unfortunately they don't actually have many ways to deal with spam / serious incidents. It's mostly just the ability to hide posts.

Also, considering they're not paid there's no requirement for any of them to be online, so I'm sure there are many nights when there is zero moderation. The fact MN still relies on volunteers when the site is used by people all over the world is just ridiculous, especially as there have been numerous incidents that show just how important 24/7 moderation is for a site like MN.

They just make a new account immediately. All you need is a new email and a VPN or be in incognito mode. They probably have them already set up and just log in immediately

The disgusting posts I saw were huge walls of text, repetitive, copied and pasted. Disruptive to genuine posters and those of us wanting to chat and blocking the threads.
A basic word limit - even if for new posters only, or during the night time unmoderated hours, would surely be simple to apply?
(We are all, rightly, subject to photos being checked and these appear after a brief delay so why not the same with big chunks of words)

Why don’t they pay moderators?
