New board request - Help Me Find Stuff

CoupDeToe · 04/08/2026 07:38

Could we have a board where we help people look for things?

Half-remembered song lyrics where the OP wants to identify the song, books they read as a child and remember little bits of, old TV shows that they remember some scenes of etc.

It could just be just for remembering things that people half-remember, or it could also be for finding physical stuff (eg a replacement for a lost beloved toy)

I really enjoy threads like this but they tend to be scattered around and often end up in AIBU. There are lots of sub-reddits focussed on this kind of thing (eg "Tip of My Tongue", "Find That Song", "What Song Is This?") and I was thinking that it might be fun and helpful to have a similar board on Mumsnet

I think it’s a good idea. I would put it in my Favourites list.

KellyMumsnet · 05/08/2026 10:32

Oh, this sounds like a nice idea! As always, we'd want to be pretty confident a board like this would be well used, but we're always happy to consider new ideas.

If you'd be in favour (and if you wouldn't, too), do put your comments and ideas in this thread and we will keep reading.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/08/2026 10:35

Might be an idea to make it clear in the thread title that it's for songs, books, half-remembered things, otherwise every second post is going to be 'where did I put my car keys/wrapping paper/ironing board' etc?

Davros · 05/08/2026 10:51

What section could it be under? That will influence how well used it is. Does MN announce new sections and, if so, how?

Yes I could ask MN to change it, although I was toying with the idea that it could also be used for helping find physical items too - like hunts for a copy of a favourite toy. That might be overcomplicating it.

Does anyone have any good name ideas? I like "Tip of My Tongue" on Reddit but that's already taken of course

Maybe "Other stuff" with AIBU and AMA etc.

Ideally, if someone could come up with a title starting with "A" so that it could appear next to them that might help with traffic 😆

I'm in favour. You could call it something like 'The Board Of Lost Things'. It would be perfectly reasonable for this to host both 'where did I put my glasses' and 'can you help me find this children's book from the 1970s' type of threads.

Both can involve a certain amount of detective work and are nice and satisfying if solved.

Ooh I like "Board of Lost Things" [BOLT]

Sounds like a great idea!

Given the suggestion above for an "A" title how about the simple (but self explanatory) "Anyone know...?"

Ineffable23 · 05/08/2026 19:04

I like the board of lost things or board of lost stuff - I think it's perfectly reasonable for that to include what was this random old book and where can I find a duplicate of my children's soft toy and where might my keys be.

If we called it "Aha!" It would sit just above AIBU in the list...

Although then people might think it is about the Norwegian pop group

All the Lost Things?

Anyone Found?

Edited

Ha ha, loads of Gen Xers reminiscing about Morten Harket 😆

Great idea.

Really wish AIBU wasn't used for everything. People say they are doing it for traffic which is silly really.

Davros · 06/08/2026 08:35

“Help me find…”?

Davros · 06/08/2026 08:54

Which is basically what you said 😆

Darragon · Today 14:16

I love it but will it get enough traffic to be helpful to people or would most only go there when they personally wanted to find something?

Ah, the famous ironing board. Did it ever turn up?
😂

It's hard to tell unless we try it perhaps. I'd be checking it regularly to see if I can help with anything as I love solving these kind of mysteries.

I think it did - wasn't it on top of the wardrobe in the spare room?

If not - it might be worth checking there now...
