Is this a new rule regarding posting selfies?

I've just seen a thread by someone who posted a 'guess my age' 'selfie', has been deleted with the message from MNHQ...

"This thread has been deleted
We're taking this one down as we're not comfortable hosting threads inviting comments on uploaded photographs when we can't verify that the images are of the poster or are shared with permission."

I must say I couldn't agree more, as we never know whether the photo is of the actual poster, or posted by an ex or someone else with a vendetta, inviting criticism.

However, I'm just wondering if this is an actual rule now and if we should report when we see them?

I agree, I never know why posters want people to guess their age anyway.

No, especially when the guesses tend to range from 25 to 55!

I don’t know about whether that’s a one off or a new policy but I agree with you and I am often very uncomfortable with posts asking for evaluation of the OP’s body/weight/features with photos. It’s problematic from the point of view of unverified images and also because some of those threads seem motivated by psychological problems that are not helped by either positive or negative opinions from other posters and definitely not helped by someone deciding to be vicious. Difficult to police I guess.

Izzyink · 09/07/2026 11:36

I hope it is a new rule.

IronEverything · 09/07/2026 11:39

I hate those stupid threads so this rule would be welcomed by me.

PillsBox · 09/07/2026 11:42

Yes I hope so too but clarification on whether we should be reporting would be good.

Not only are selfies impossible to verify but the whole 'guess my age' thing is completely pointless anyway, so why risk the fact it might not be the OP in the photo.

You don't need "clarification" on whether or not it's a new rule.

The deletion message is perfectly clear.

If you see similar in the future just report the thread and MN will take it down.

Decacaffeinatednow · 09/07/2026 12:24

It’s about time MN took action on those type of posts

Bristolandlazy · 09/07/2026 12:30

Good, those posts are weird. I hope they clamp down on the weird/fake posts too.

thus is a good thing, but how does it square with the post I linked above that is asking people to send mumsnet photos to be used in an ad campaign where all those in the photos may not have given consent?

(and it initially had a pic of 3 nude teen girls, taken from behind running into water as part of the first post take by, iirc quite a problematic photographer)

Hi all, We’re looking for real photos from Mumsnetters’ gloriously pre-smartphone youths for a new Mumsnet ad campaign about getting kids off screens...

I am glad about the ban on posting'selfies' but yes, encouraging people to send in old photos which could be of anyone at all, doesn't sound right.

I didn't say I needed clarification?

But I would like it.

I’m all for banning selfies. At best they’re attention seeking. There was a problematic thread a couple of weeks ago where it looked like bullies had uploaded a picture of a teen to get people to comment on it. The OPs comments were bizarre and clearly designed to get negative comments about the photo. I am glad MN are taking this seriously.
I did love how we dealt with a spate of endless “Guess my age” threads a few years back and loads of people started giving silly answers because everyone was fed up of so many of these threads.

AnonymityAnonymity · 09/07/2026 13:23

Brilliant if this puts an end to those horrible threads where OP's posts an image puporpedly of themselves and ask questions like How old do I look?
It's always amazes me how many pp actually engage with those type of threads.

PillsBox · 10/07/2026 11:26

@MNHQ is anyone available to look at this thread please?

Overtheatlantic · 10/07/2026 11:28

But what about the jumpsuit thread from yesterday? That was a selfie.

This is the site stuff board. I presume you don't work for MN??

itchyelbowsandswollenankles · 10/07/2026 11:29

There was a really nasty thread this week where the OP has seemingly taken stills from a social media video of a woman to get people to comment on her weight. Hopefully MNHQ are cracking down

She should have blocked out her face, the suit was awful and just invited negative comments IMO.

That was the first thing that came to my mind too. This is a great rule if it's now the official stance.

I'd also like it applied to those awful threads about people's homes on Right Move where posters want others to comment on how 'horrible' a house is. Really nasty and unnecessary.

Decacaffeinatednow · 10/07/2026 11:31

@Overtheatlantic
Exactly. I reported that to MN yesterday on the basis of this thread. Lily's reply was 'can you let us know what you mean by a selfie'. The mind boggles.

Agree. They never go well. Ever. Ive seen a few of them and in some cases its fairly obvious the poster has some learning difficulties and gets a bashing about their looks and then gets very, very upset.

Others appear like they are posting someone else's photos to get people to slag them off.

Either way its unhealthy and encourages bullying

Rollercoaster1920 · 10/07/2026 11:38

Will if affect sporner corner?

I didn’t see that thread but were they asking what people thought of the jumpsuit?

If so, they don’t need their face in it anyway.

@PillsBox tagging MNHQ doesn't work. They don't get those notifications.
