notifications, are they just random and not real

BillericayDickie · 11/04/2026 09:19

Just had a notification that a user had reacted to a post of mine from 2007.
it is a tiny thread with about 8 posts (3 are mine) not even an interesting thread.
I really can't imagine any real person is reading a thread from 2007.
so are the reactions real?

edited to add it was by anonymous user

Obviously only MN can answer your question re notifications being real. But I do know that periodically some users trawl through old threads and sometimes post on them even though they very old - not long ago someone did this with a thread from 2015.

So people obviously are interested in old threads and I think its entirely plausible someone genuinely reacted to one of your posts.

What's an anonymous user? We're all anonymous

It doesn't sound totally unlikely as the thread might have come up via Google depending on what the subject was

BillericayDickie · 11/04/2026 11:55

the user was called anonymous user

Why?

Let's just say someone Googles 'Hypothyroidism' a Mumsnet thread may well come up.

It's the same with any subject one might Google.

Morning @BillericayDickie. This sounds legit, don't worry. If a user is registered, but has never posted (and therefore, never chosen a username), they can show up "Anonymous user" because we have no other identifier for them. It's probably someone who has searched for a topic on Google, found an old thread and just wanted to respond, as a previous poster here suggests. If you have any further contact or worries about it though, just let us know and we'll take a closer look.

BillericayDickie · 13/04/2026 10:00

thanks @KellyMumsnet it just seemed so odd as the thread was so uninteresting.

In addition to what others have said about site searches on different topics, sometimes there are "similar threads" suggestions at the bottom of the page and they can turn out to be from years ago and people might not notice that immediately when they click on one.

Now I want to know what your uninteresting topic was 😄
